This is indeed a sad piece of news to receive. What more, during Ramadhan.
The High Court is to hear his Habeas Corpus application.
The Malaysia Today editor and popular blogger begins his detention today.
According to Malaysiakini, Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar signed his detention order last night for Raja Petra to be held without trial under section 8(1) of the tough security law. Under the Act, the government can renew his detention indefinitely.
Lawyers said the police had informed them this morning that they would be taking Raja Petra to the detention centre.
"Act by the minister to sign the section 8 order yesterday is completely unacceptable," said Raja Petra's lead lawyer Malik Imtiaz. The Kuala Lumpur High Court is to hear a habeas corpus bid by Raja Petra's lawyers to overturn the detention of the controversial blogger today.
Habeas corpus is a writ ordering prisoners to be brought before a judge to ascertain if there are any procedural defects which could render their detention unlawful.
Raja Petra's wife Marina Abdullah confirmed that the police had informed her that the detention order had been issued by the minister yesterday.
Also present in the court this morning was recently resigned minister Zaid Ibrahim.
Raja Petra, 58, was arrested along with two others two weeks ago and has been under police custody in an unknown location. The other two - Sin Chew Daily senior journalist Tan Hoon Cheng, 33 and Selangor senior executive councillor and parliamentarian Teresa Kok, 43 - have since been freed.Tan was released 18 hours after her arrest, while Kok was freed seven days later.
According to his lawyer J Chandra, Raja Petra was arrested for publishing articles on his news portal which tarnished the leadership of the country and insulted the sanctity of Islam.
The former newspaper columnist has already been charged with sedition and defamation after linking Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife to the sensational murder of a Mongolian woman.
I read the headlines with much sadness and anger .. sad for RPK and anger at the despicable act of preventing natural justice to take precedence in RPK's case.I can only hope that some BN politicians if they have any sense of decency and professionalism will intervene on behalf of RPK, at the same time repeal the ISA .As to the other politicians on the other side. enough posturing do something!
A police state now, no less. Who will be next?
You've gone tru it and so do Marina, RPK's wife. I am not connected at all but just an ordinary Malaysia and it hurts. How long more? why it happens now while people are about to celebrate the coming Eidulfitri. My prayer is for RPK and family. To Home Minister, tak kan dalam bulan RAMADHAN pun buat kerja macam ini. Insaf lah dan ingat lah the world is round. Hari ini hari kamu tetapi esok belum tahu lagi. Selamat menyambut Aidilfitri. dh9753
Berbuih mulur kita pun dia nak sign, dia sign juga.
So what happens to his sedition charges then?
He says he has the majority support of the people. Who are they? His party members! That means, less than 30% of the Malaysian supported him. And now he is acting like Hitler!
I wonder how the " bald headed arab wanna be" sleeps at night! Some with difficulty count sheep, I guess this fellow counts ISA detainees. What a shameful day for malaysia !
Also present NAS were some 30 simple people who hartalled and came only to find that all the prominent persons were conspiciously absent. No one talked to these bewildered persons. Some even prought flowers & cards.
No one including Marina, the "lawyers" Zaid etc bothered to talk to them!
When I left at 10.55am, these persons were so lost, it turned my stomach as the "prominent" ones were only interested bin talking to the Media!
This is the reason why the voters shall throw out UMNO in the next General Election ... Wali Kota
Hi all ...
So very sad & sorry to hear the development of RPK's ISA case. I have no one else but the present sleepy PM and his stupid goons ... including this botak idiot fella ... lets get to work & remove all these pest out of office ... fast & furious ... then we send them to experience the so called excellent hospitality as RPK, Theresa & Kickdefella kena recently ... lets see how they take it to be in the detention cells, eating the 'good' food and most of all how their respective families' take to their own family members kena the ISA thing. We will NOT FORGET this ... we WILL REMEMBER this dozzy head ... it's you day in the sun now ... fine ... but we will also have our turn ... hopefully soon. Beware!!
kenapa perlu rasa simpati kpd manusia yg memburukkan secara terang-terangan kpd agama Islam? simpati yg sia-sia..
YES ! betul, i signed the detention order ...so...so !?
I can't wait for a hot day when Hamid and Dollah are in the dock answering for their past deeds. So, will Mahathir. When do these guys ever learn history?
rpk deserve the isa, malaysia today portal is a bastion for anything that is anti police, anti government, anti islam and anti malay.
rpk has no respect for the authority, being a royal blood he think he is untouchable.
