It Should Be Nurin Alert!

...because she made it all happen.

My take (in the NST today) on the child abduction alert system - to be called NUR (Nationwide Urgent Response) Alert -- to be formalized by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.

I can only guess why the ministry is not going to call it by its original name NURIN (Nationwide Urgent Response Information Network) Alert but I won't speculate.

So, as I have said, it should be called NURIN Alert. After all, if Nurin had not been brutalized and died, this plan to put an early alert system in place wouldn't happen. And, did I say that we all couldn't save her?

Oh -- you do remember Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, don't you? The 8 year-old who was abducted from somewhere near her home in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur on the night of Aug 20, 2007.

Someone dragged her into a van.

She was never to be seen again until Sept 17, about a month later at a location far from that pasar malam -- in PJS1, Petaling Jaya.

She was dead, her body crumpled, brutalized, she was thin, her hair shaven, and a cucumber was stuck in her....(never mind). The child suffered unimaginable pain and horror.

And her body was found in a gym bag.

In death, she was so unrecognizable. Her father, Jazimin Abdul Jalil could not even recognize her, he could not identify her. Perhaps it was just too much for him.

I can never forget that image of Nurin after her body was found -- her thin face, shorn head -- a pale shadow of her when she was alive.

The nation was shocked and outraged.

Immediately after her death, there was a move to begin pushing for something akin to AMBER Alert which is highly successful in the US in saving and rescuing abducted kids. The initiative was for NURIN Alert.

Also read THIS.

Such a system would have helped Jazimin in notifying the police, enforcement agencies and the media about Nurin's disappearance. The community would also be the eyes for these agencies.

When Jazimin first reported her disappearance to the police, he did not get much help. It was about 2 days after her disappearance that his plea was taken seriously.

To cut a story short, the initiative was supported by so many people including Shahrizat Jalil who was then the Women, Family and Community development Minister.

Anyway...it's now going to be NUR Alert.

It should be NURIN Alert.

Ask any Malaysian, they'd remember Nurin. She united us all in our anger and our shock.

We failed to save her. But we know she did not die in vain. So, let's do it right. Leave politics and political branding out of all this.

Do it for our children. Do it to save the next child!

And oh, did I forget to remind us all that Nurin's her killer was never caught.

"NUR" I guess is quite widely used and "NURIN" may just as well drown in so many "NUR".

"NUR" in the religion of Islam, is also very common and widely used.

So I think, "NURIN" would be more distinctive, therefore better for a specific purpose, wouldn't it?

Nik,

Salam Nik. yes, it's been so long since our Nurin Alert pro-tem committee met to push for this. Imagine we had the support of the corporate sector and raja Zarith Sofia not to mention the thousands of Malaysians here and abroad.

It is a mistake to call the system NUR. Shahrizat told me because it is closer to the minsitry's brand, NUR.That is precisely why we shouldn't call it NUR.

Here's Rocky's comment in my fb:
"Terry Fox, Rachel Corrie and Amber Hagerman were not the only ones who died of cancer, killed protesting Gaza occupation by Israel, and abducted and murdered by adult/s. But theirs were compelling stories that make for powerful symbols. For... us in Malaysia, Nurin Jazlin is our universal symbol of our fear for the safety of our children and our love for them. Sure, we have lost many other little kids and many of them were murdered, raped, or simply vanished. But Nurin is a story that united our anger as well as our collective guilt as a society. She moved us to do something about it. We should salute Shahrizat for having the political will to push it all the way but now she must drop the need for political brandings (like the talian Nur series) and call this simply Nurin Alert."

That sums it all up.

Politics delayed the implementation for this alert system.

And i'll tell you, politics will make it all go wrong.

In the US in 1996, after Amber Hagerman was found dead, AMBER Alert was swiftly put in place within the same year.

Now, so long after Nurin's death, we are finally putting a system into place, an alert for missing children. But more than any alert, parents themselves have the biggest role to play in the protection of their children from abductors. Even now, when I go to public places like shopping complexes etc, I see small children running about seemingly unattended. Ofcourse their parents/guardians are around, but I fear they may not be near enough to keep an eye on their child every second. And the time it can take for a child to be kidnapped is the blink of an eye. Abductors are skilled at luring away children to a spot where they can abduct them. Even seemingly crowded places are not as safe as some parents might think. Even in residential areas, one can see small kids running about playing outside their homes without supervision. So it would be prudent for the ministry concerned to come out with some helpful community service announcements giving gentle advice on how to keep our children safe. It does not have to sound ominous and scary. It can be simple and matter of fact, but it will serve as a reminder to parents not to take anything for granted. Better safe than sorry.

this is a no-brainer. NURIN it should be.

As for NURIN - Never Understand Reasons In Names - the ministry should just stick on NURIN ALERT.

It is the primary objectives that counts not just fancy names that can be traslated into merchandizing tees.

We hate to be reminded on Nurin brutal murder. Its too painful. But we must always be pro-active as to avoid the same mistakes again.

We also do not want to be reminded on Dato Sosilawati & friends murder too.

Go on...NURIN ALERT, please.

Hi, I'm trying to piece together a documentary on missing children in Malaysia, and would like to seek your insight on the matter. I would really appreciate it if you could get in touch with me as soon as possible. Thanks in advance!
