Isn't This A Crackdown?

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar has said that the government is "not making arrests just for the sake of arrests."

"We will not make any more arrests under the ISA as long as there is no more disturbance to public peace and order," he told reporters in Johor Baru yesterday morning, hours before Sin Chew Jit Poh senior journalist Tan Hoon Cheng was released.

Malaysia Today editor and blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok are still being detained.

All three were arrested under the ISA on Friday.

RPK was arrested for publishing inflammatory including those which insult Islam, while Teresa for allegedly criticizing the "azan" (call to prayer) in a mosque in Kinrara. She has denied this and the mosque committee has backed her on this.

So, since the minister couldn't be straight, let me be -- this is a crackdown.

And this is intimidation.

In the first place, I wasn't aware that there was any disturbance to public peace and order.

I am shocked that the ISA is being used to "deal" with RPK and Teresa.

And on Hoon Cheng? I am very disturbed by this.

Arresting a journalist under the ISA for a report she had written? How can the government ever justify this?

But --oh, detaining her for 16 hours was for her own good because she had received threats to her safety?
Repeat that, please!
So does it mean that after 16 hours, from now on, her safety is assured?

(Hoon Cheng's controversial four-paragraph report quoting Bukit Bendera Umno division chief Ahmad Ismail calling the Chinese community ‘squatters’ sparked an outcry among the Chiense, including the Chinese political parties in the ruling Barisan Nasional.)

Was Hoon Cheng a threat to public/national security? Isn't that THE basis for any ISA arrest? That said -- not that ISA arrests in this country were made on that basis, in the first place.

For as long as the ISA is in existence, it will continue to be abused.

Nice to hear from you. So many Malaysians are disturbed and here come the minister telling us he did not order the arrest-..disgusting. So he is declaring that he is 'tunggul'. Wonder how people appointed as minister fail to uphold the 'amanah' given to him. Such serious decision that affect the reputation of the nation, he was not aware-real lawak jenaka -so is he shirking his responsibility or looking for a fall guy to save his skin. So minister Hamid, in order to free you from the curse of the nation and to make sure you are not "tunggul"-just release all the ISA detainees and no more excuses. dh9753

Just look at the clear bullshit face of Hamid Albar whenever he appeared on TV. I can even see his forked tongue. His favourite one-liner is: in accordance with the law. Why can't he admit that the rakyat have dumped UMNO on 08/03/08. The ISA will be automatically abolished when Pakatan Rakyat takes over Parliament, the latest by next General Election ... Wali Kota

Since the Kinrara mosque committee has already confirmed & clarify that Theresa was not involved, release her immediately.
This is the despicable act of Khir Toyo and the UMNO control MSM. He must now go to the mosque , see the Imam and bertaubat and help with the immediate release of Theresa. Do it now Khir in this Holy month of Ramadhan.

An innocent soul has been wrongfully & wilfully detained because of you where is your conscience Khir ?
Just because you heard Kinrara mosque you think it's linked to Theresa as she is the YB of Kinrara ADUN.

Let me tell you Khir, i am staying in Kinrara, but the area where this Kinrara mosque sits come under the jurisdiction of Seri Serdang ADUN but not Kinrara ADUN.
Wake up Khir.

So the 'Minister Of Police Road-Blocks'stated that Hoon Cheng was ISA'd to protect her as the police believed that her life was threatened by you know who. If it is so, has the police pick up the culprit and charged or be ISA'd for threatening her life? Reading statement after statement of the Minister had killed my brain cells progressively.

its one pooh-pooh after another. how a group of stupid Mps running off to Taiwan in the middle of the nite trying to prevent a cross-over. and giving all the stupid reasons in trying to deny their fear of the crossovers. and now this stupid reasoning for the ISA of the journalist and teresa kok.
wonder why we lost an island and claim victory in return for two peebles? who was the Minister behind this loss?

Good morning Nuraina,

Now they are saying Tan is under ISA for her protection. What rubbish!

Our government is full of incompetent ministers who don't know the ropes of their job. If our Home Minister is a doctor, he would decapitivate his patient's head to treat his patient's headache.

I am afraid that's all the talents our PM got to make up his cabinet!

Theresa Kok? what did she do to get halued up? Even if she was involved in the petition, there is no reason for her detention. Consumers and residents have a right to peace and quiet in their own neighbourhoods, kan?

My Concern now is the fact that Ahmad Bodoh is allowed to go on a Roadshow to stir up rural Malay sentiment so that they will mindlessly go on riot against the Chinese Community!!

I must compliment you on a very good
writ-up on the current use of the ISA by the government. There is a possibility that Albar was not aware of the reporter's arrest initially and came to know about it later. Thus his idiotic response in the news conference!Imagine the ISA being misused and abused to this level.I hope that this is not the beginning of a major crackdown.Maybe it is AAB's way of telling those who think he is lembik that he can be tought too!

since he had clarifed that Tan was "detained for her own safety", she had more than enuf ground to sue this Home Minister for wrongful arrest. If it was ascertained that her life was under threat, the police should not have arrested her and took her away inhandcuffes, as a citizen of this country, she is entitled for protection from the authority and certainly not to be treated like a criminal. In future, Pak Lah, can we have a a more intelligent person be appointed as a cabinet minister?

Anonymous said...

Wait, let me get this right. If the government would like make sure that my safety is assured, they will ARREST me under ISA. Section 73(1) of the ISA states that one could be arrested without a warrant if he or she acts in any manner prejudicial to

i) security of Malaysia or any part thereof or
ii) maintenance of essential services therein or
iii) the economic life thereof

So, according to the government's logic, if my life is threatened or in jeopardy, I am in effect doing one of the three things above and as such, can be detained without trial for my own safety. Cool. I feel so safe now.

All BN Ministers have a standard Govt issue gizmo which when you hold up to the wind will register 'ISA-type trouble brewing' or 'ISA-type trouble not brewing/over.'

This gizmo's range covers East M'sia as well, so they are superbly placed to carry out pre-emptive strikes throughout the land, while we, neolithic age dumbos and peasants, have no clue about national security issues.

Like Patrick says, Niamah!!

I am also very sure, the rakyat will be after their blood and flesh once Barisan Nasional is buried.

Dr M takes cheap pot shots to stir racial unrest in Singapore again
Posted on September 15, 2008 by wayangparty
By Mohammad Fairuz

There he goes again. Unable to win support from even his own UMNO members, many of whom view him as a pariah to be banished forever from the shores of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir Mohamad has set his sights across the causeway at his “unfortunate” brethen in Singapore.

In an article entitled “Malay unity and Malaysian unity” (point 21) published on his blog, chedet, Dr Mahathir took a snipe at the “plight” of Singapore Malays:

“The Malays have seen what has happened to the Malays of Singapore and they have no desire to be like Singapore Malays.”

It is most unbecoming for a foreign statesman to keep interfering in our domestic affairs. Dr Mahathir’s insinuations that the Malays in Singapore are second class citizens as compared to the state of the Chinese in Malaysia are totally unfounded, baseless and malicious.

Had a Singaporean make the following remarks on a blog or forum, he will be charged under the Sedition Act or arrested under the ISA immediately.

We have no New Economic Policy in Singapore to give discriminatory preferences for any particular race, yet the malay community in Singapore had made tremendous progress over the last 20 years as shown by this report on Mendaki.

The percentage of a Malay P1 Cohort entering Tertiary Institutions (polytechnic and university) has more than doubled from 13 % in 1990 to 28% in 1999. The proportion admitted to university has increased by almost 1.5 times from 2.9% in 1990 to 4.2% in 1999.

The proportion of Malays holding higher level and skilled jobs has increased over the years. In 1990only 12% of Malays were holding administrative and managerial, professional and technical and related jobs. This had increased to 23% by 2000.

The median monthly income of resident Malay workers rose from $954 in 1990 to $1790 in 2000. This represents an annual growth of 6.5% in nominal terms or 4.7% in real terms. The highest income levels were among younger Malays. The median resident Malay household income has also risen from $1880 to $2880.

Though I do not have exact figures to show, I believe that young Singapore Malays have the highest median income compared to their counterparts in Malaysia and Indonesia.

I wonder what motives Dr Mahathir had in making such disparaging remarks about a neighboring country. Perhaps he should put his own house in order first before meddling in the affairs of his neighbors.

It is a real shame that after 22 years under his rule, racial harmony in Malaysia has deteriorated to such a deplorable state that even a second-tier UMNO leader can make inflammatory speeches publicly to incite racial tension with impunity and let off with just a slap on the wrist.

In Singapore, such fiascos are almost unheard of because our policies are based solely on meritocracy and not the color of the skin. All races are treated equally in terms of educational and career opportunity.

The speaker of our House is a Malay, Mr Yaacob Ibrahim. One of our two DPMs is an Indian, Mr Jayakumar and our Finance Minister is a Christian of Sri Lankan descent, Mr Tharman. There was not a time when we need Chinese leaders to speak out for the Chinese, Malay leaders to harp on Malay rights or Indian leaders to take to the streets to protest against discrimination by the government.

Dr Mahathir should visit Singapore one day to see how the Malay community here has prospered in spite of the lack of any affirmative policies formulated specially for them. He can also visit all the three universities in Singapore and offer them a scholarship to Universti Malaya, Universti Sains Malaysia or Universiti Tecknologi Mara and see if there are any takers.

Least before I forget, Dr Mahathir was not even a pure Malay to begin with. What gives him the right to speak up for the Malays in Singapore? Thanks, Dr M, but no thanks, please reserve your racial rhetoric to your fellow UMNOputras only for even the young Malays in Malaysia are finding your “ketuanan melayu” concept increasingly outdated, irrelevant and unpalatable.
