Pak Lah Gives Way...

Umno president Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will not defend his post in the Umno elections in March.

The PM will go on a two-month leave before handing over the premiership to his successor, presumably, deputy Umno president and Deputy PM, Najib Abdul Razak.

Badawi’s fall —Farish A Noor

At the rate things are going in Malaysia — Malaysia’s Central Bank has reported a capital flight of 1.1 Billion US dollars in August alone — the fall of Badawi and the UMNO-led government may come sooner than later

It is not often that I sermonise in my articles, and it has been a month since the OtherMalaysia.org research project was brought to a close. Yet despite everything, the tone and tenor of Malaysia’s convoluted politics and the country’s slide into decline forces us to take stock of how far Malaysia has, or hasn’t, travelled over the past 50 years of its independence.

With the feeble administration of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi teetering on the verge of implosion and collapse, Malaysians are preparing themselves for the worst to come. Since 2004, Malaysia has in fact been running on autopilot, a point made clear to me by a European diplomat who once asked me, “Is anyone running this country and does Badawi even know what is going on?”

Cocooned from the realities of a society that has experienced large-scale and even traumatic changes, the Badawi government proved itself to be totally dislocated and clueless over what was happening.

In time, historians like myself will have to take up our pens and write the political obituary of Prime Minister Badawi. The portrait will not be a pretty one: While this ‘man of the people’ was surrounded by a closed circle of relatives and family friends who were his confidants, Badawi seemed totally oblivious to the fate of millions of ordinary Malaysians who had to endure five years of his lacklustre non-leadership.

Badawi claimed to be the ‘Prime Minister of all Malaysians’, but showed scant concern for the plight of dozens of Hindu temples that were being demolished in the country. And when Malaysia’s Hindu community begged and pleaded for his intervention to save their cherished places of worship, this ‘leader of all Malaysians’ chose to look the other way and was cowed into submission by the more vocal, communitarian and sectarian bigots of his own right-wing ethno-nationalist party.

Time and again, Badawi could and should have done the right thing to control the extremists in the ranks of his own party. But he chose instead to let them play to the gallery to shore up his own flaccid personality and lagging popularity. On two occasions — at his UMNO party’s general assembly — the leader of the Youth Wing of UMNO brandished a weapon in public while professing that the Malays were the community that deserved a special position and privileges in Malaysia.

Such hotheaded right-wing rants are befit for a demagogue of a fascist party, but once again Badawi did nothing to curb the excesses of the extremists of his own party UMNO.

The most recent outrage came when yet another UMNO leader — Ahmad Ismail — caused a ruckus in the state of Penang when he and his followers openly threatened and insulted Malaysians of non-Malay origin at a press conference. In a statement calculated to inflame tempers, the UMNO members called on the Malays to unite and warned the Malaysian Chinese community not to behave like American Jews. A photo of a Malaysian Chinese politician was torn, and tempers flared as expected.

Again, the Malaysian public is asking: What is Badawi going to do?

For decades, Malaysians of all walks of life have had to live by the propaganda of the UMNO party and the coalition it has led. Malaysians have been warned about the dangers of communism, socialism, class-based workers and student movements; and even taught to fear a free and independent media. Yet the vile and poisonous racist outbursts that have emanated and echoed across the corridors of power in the country have by and large come from UMNO and its band of vociferous sabre-rattling leaders, whose only recourse to an intelligent argument has been vile racist remarks, sexist jokes and abuse.

How many times must Malaysians have to tolerate this party whose leaders and members remain the most brazen and vocally racist in the country? And how much longer do Malaysians have to wait before the present prime minister, whose impotence and inability to act and speak decisively has been one of the root causes of Malaysia’s social fragmentation?

It is doubly ironic that Ahmad Ismail’s racist remarks came just as the fasting month of Ramazan was beginning. This, being a holy month where patience and forbearance are lauded above all, made the timing of his press conference and abusive remarks all the more pointed and bitter.

At the rate things are going in Malaysia — Malaysia’s Central Bank has reported a capital flight of 1.1 Billion US dollars in August alone — the fall of Badawi and the UMNO-led government may come sooner than later. Historians will no doubt have ample time to write and ruminate about the manifold failings of Badawi, but his fall will serve as a benchmark in the country’s history as it signifies the moment when Malaysians have had enough of the most ineffective governance the country has had for five decades, and were willing to accept anything else instead, whatever the cost.

(1) The BN corrupt machinery has lorded over this country the past 50 years, and nothing is sacred to them anymore. The police, the judiciary and every other government department and institutions seems to do BN bidding and the right or wrong of each act is never discussed for they just follow orders - they "Just Do It".

So wouldn't all these acts be considered highly 'unethical' to say the least?

(2) Many of these purported crossover BN MPs are sick to their core of the continuing inefficiency and blatant corrupt practices of their more powerful BN counterparts, especially the Umno clique.

This includes the latter strident display of racism, continually raising the spectre of May 13, blatant disregard of basic human rights and selective targeting and incarceration of their opponents, or just about anyone they don't like, e.g. Teresa Kok, Raja Petra and Hindraf 5.

But there is no "show cause" letter to that very racist Utusan Malaysia. How many Malaysians can stomach these dirty actions and how many subscribe to Umno's make-believe world?

(3) Persistent calls by Sabah politicians within the BN circle to institute a royal commission on how so many million foreigners can own our blue ICs and become Malaysian citizens are totally ignored to this day to the continuing detriment of genuine Malaysian Sabahans security, peace and the hope of continued prosperity in this rich Land Below The Wind.

(4) Likewise, wholesale giveaways of valuable government land to cronies in Sarawak and calls to investigate the Taib Dynasty are all given short shrift.

(5) Is it any wonder that many of these BN MPs are prepared to crossover to Anwar camp with no promises of monetary rewards as stated by Anwar many times? Likewise, is it wrong or unethical for Anwar to state that if elected with the help of these crossover BN MPs, he will ensure that Sabah is again ruled by a true Sabahan - a Kadazan and not an Umnoputra?

For the same reason, Sarawak will then be ruled by a true Sarawakian - an Iban. What can be so 'unethical' about these wise moves?

(6) Most Malaysians are immigrants of one sort or another when they migrated to this country now called Malaysia. The could be a Chinese with 600 years of ancestry or they could be Indonesians from Java, Sumatera or other parts of the vast Indonesian archipelago some 800 years ago.

Or they could be from India (Madras, Kerala etc), with some 100 years of ancestry. It is interesting further to note that Chinese Malaysian Muslims are not classified as "bumis" like some Malaysian Indian Muslims even though they profess the religion of Islam, think and act and eat like all other Muslims, observe Ramadhan, go to the same mosques etc. And don't forget there are some 100 million Chinese Muslims in China today!

(7) The true "natives" and "sons of the soil" like our aborigines (the Sakai, Negrito etc), and the Dayaks, Ibans, Kadazans etc, in Sabah and Sarawak - some of which may have been classified as bumis - are badly marginalised and handed only crumbs for development spending, if any at all.

Sadly, the situation is prevalent all over the world where the true natives are badly marginalised - the Aborigines in Australia, the Inuits in Japan and the Native Americans in the US.

(8) There is therefore nothing unethical or corrupt bout Anwar strategy to rule Malaysia - the BN coalition will resort to the same if they were ever popular after March 8. Anwar is Malaysia only chance at true salvation to make this rich country a much better place for all Malaysians, regardless of colour, creed or religion and to live and learn from each other.

Our unique multiculturalism can then be preserved and encouraged. Ask ourselves: what has BN done in all their 50 year rule except to enrich further the fabulously rich cronies in their group?

(9) A 916 is the best way out, and time is of the essence: you cannot wait for the next election. If BN are so sure of themselves, why are they so afraid to convene parliament earlier? Any straw voting will tell the whole BN set-up that they are now irrelevant.

Go on... keep speculating!
Five months or so is not a long time
I'm still capable of doing "something"
I can still make my life sublime!

Go on... keep speculating!
I'm no lame-duck premier
I can certainly do "something"
And leave behind a souvenier!

Go on ... keep speculating!
I know the peoples' aspiration
Day by day it is accumulating
I will yet find my inspiration!

Go on... keep speculating!
It doesn't add to my ignominy
It is "something" I'm still meditating!
"Something" that's good for the economy!

Go on... keep speculating!
I may yet leave behind my footprint!
It will be history in the making!
And in the peoples's minds imprint!

Yes, Pak Lah wants to leave but will handover to his successor, most likely, Najib, if he wins the UMNO election in March 2009. There is a catch there. Many things can happen during this period. Many are contesting for deputy president post and even president's post may be open for contest. Meanwhile the possibility of Pakatan Rakyat's desire to takeover the government. Let us wait and see how things unfold.

Pak Lah chicken out. Running away macam tikus.
Nice to know what really push him out. The man who knows himself but doesn't know his enemy. Anyway.
Nice to see if he can implement the three important things that were mentioned during his press conference. He should include abolishment of ISA and the release of all ISA detainees.
He got five months to do it and if successful, Malaysians must salute him and he will be remembered for that feat. dh9753

If he go of his premiership , he must NOT waste the country's money by going on 2 months leave.
As go means go and not on paid 2 months holiday.
Before this announcement , he said that he still have many things to do and many things that he promised last time will be implemented before going away or sayonara.
By going on 2 months leave , this simply means he is irresponsible and took Malaysian for another ride.
Well, empty head is indeed empty head.He better release all ISA detainees as well and issue out an apology to all political detainees of the past and current.
Or else how can we remembers him as a PM? He is already well known as the the PM who don't keeps his words.
Tell that man to do something important before parting ways.
Whether he is the PM or najid is the PM ,what differences ?

And no , we don't welcomes najid ( replacement PM ) with open arms here. He is just another....
Oh, well . We will discuss on najid another time another day.

You know what is so disgusting about all this?

The next Prime Minister of Malaysia is being decided by the failed present one and the PM in waiting. If you want to talk about self-serving conflicts of interests, here you see it operating at the highest of levels.

I suppose between them theywould have discussed just like Badawi would have discussed with Mahathir and made whatever promises.

I can imagine Najib thinking, "sure, easy to promise you anything, but they will only be promises." See, how good your promises to Mahathir turned out?"

This whole thing is such a sham. Najib will take on the Premiership along with a baggage fulfl of unanswered questions. And of course until his epitaph Altantuya shall forever be etched over his name.

Regardless of who the successor is, the status quo remains. Can anyone really suggest that they will overturn the applecart?

BN could very well be slated for dismantling as fragmentation becomes a probablity Damage control may be too little too late now.

Can C4 Altantuya be a respected PeeM of Boleh Nation called Malaysia, if so then Boleh Lands' Rakyats will suffer greater hardship from the UMNO Oppressor???

The use of ISA to protect Nargis is taking a toll on the Nation’s economy, the capital flights were the nett results. It is this tyro Finance Minister who will further sleep with Bodohwi’s budget against the present world economic situation are the issues the Rakyats of Malaysia will further face and suffer greater hardship and took toll on the higher food prices that are not coming down soon. The tyro Finance Minister could not find any solution nor direction in resolving the urgent need to keep food prices down reasonably.

The UMNO Clown Botak and his cohorts will be made to taste their own medicines when the time of reckoning comes very soon.

Leave BN, all Component Parties with a conscience must leave the Evil Master Oppressor UMNO for good ok??? Leave & let them, the UMNO clowns to settle the horse trading between Flip Flop and C4 ok???

Come October 2008 there is nothing left but the Opposition Leader’s Post to Hand Over from Flip Flop to C4 ok???

There should be no peace for Botak if the ISA detainees are not released and the oppressive draconian law is not abolished because such injustices are not tolerated and thus create great discontentment in this modern society. One day Botak and his cohorts should be made to eat their own medicine for the injustices they have committed against the detainees especially RPK & Hindraf Leaders, our Brave Heros no doubts.

We call upon all the Rakyats of Malaysia to sign a Petition to be sent to the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong to release RPK from his detention under ISA because there is a hidden agenda of a conspiracy of using his detention to silence him so that he could not further release more evidences against the real C4 murderers of Altantuya because all the accused were all fall guys of the real murderers because they all did not have a real & logical motive to murder the Mongolian Lady.

THE NEW DAWN OF MALAYSIA HAS COME & THE FIRST THING IS TO ALLOW APPEALS & THEN RELEASE ALL ISA DETAINEES, ABOLISH ISA, OSA, SEDITION OR WHATEVER ACTS THAT COULD BE EXPLOITED AND MADE PREJUDICIAL AND OPPRESSIVE TO THE VOICE OF DISSENT FROM ALL THE RAKYATS.

It is very easy to generate Police Reports against DSAI by using Penang Mamak Umno’s 25 Members headed by Wan Abidin Zain, who claimed to be non-partisan, using their uneasiness that most Penangites will now be boycotting Nasi Kandar one more round???

It is very Sad that the legacy of Malaysian Independence is reduced by this Moronic Flip Flop Coward into great disrepute and a laughing stock of the whole world and knowing very well that the UMNO Government has technically collapsed and they have lost locus standi to govern but yet he has decided to shamelessly still cling on to power via dubious means like hiding himself via using of the ISA and we cannot imagine that the Malaysia Moronic Flip Flop Coward has now stoop so low and using the Police Deputy IGP as his willing tools especially the Deputy IGP’s clearly taking side as the Police must be neutral and should be not politiking for him. Now the Police and AG had stoop even lower with the tampering of Evidences against RPK and it is the shame to the Malaysian Justice with such behaviors from the Police who are sworn to uphold the Law and Order but committed criminal activities at the direction of the UMNO Clown Botak Home Minister to Protect Nargis the PeeM in waiting.

The Coward Moronic Flip Flop Chicken dare not meet DSAI face to face to settle matters but chose hiding under the use of ISA and that is what you have as a disgraceful cowardice leader for UMNO.

After 51 years MALAYSIA IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE but backwards because of the Oppression from the UMNO goons’ divide and rule fear tactics the Rakyats have matured & you must see all this coming because All The Rakyats of Malaysia are all fed-up & can no longer with-stand the hypocrisies, bullshits, lies and deceits of these UMNO Clowns now in Power ok??? What Oil Subsidies IS nothing but a hoax that the UMNO Government MAKE BELIEF THAT THERE IS AN OIL PRICE SUBSIDY TO THE PRICE OF FUEL BUT IN FACT THERE WERE NONE THIS IS BECAUSE MALAYSIA IS THE NET EXPORTER OF OIL THAT IS ONLY AFTER DEDUCTING DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION THE BALANCE IS EXPORTED TO EARN FOREIGN EXCHANGE. THESE LIARS MAKE US BELIEVE BY CONTINUOUS PROPAGANDA THAT THERE ARE OIL PRICE SUBSIDY BUT IN FACT THERE WERE NONE BECAUSE THE PRICE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACTUAL SALE LOCALLY AND THE PRICE THEY INTENDED TO SELL ABOARD IS AN OPPORTUNITY COST NOT PRICE SUBSIDY.

We urge all BN Components & MPs with a conscience to do the necessary to make possible a New Malaysia for all Rakyats of Malaysia so that all our children and their children & their children’s children’s future will be safe and secured in the Country we all love and not be intimidated by those UMNO Clowns now in power with their oppressive & fear tactics and in the verge of making Malaysia a Police State if left unchecked otherwise. Save RPK as he is the midst of a conspiracy of the real murderers of Altantuya to silence him for good, instead of being C4ed he could be poisoned and worse off if he is on hunger strike by himself. The Acting IGP is defending the Police position after being made the tools of UMNO’s fear tactics & so he is now making lame excuses for being the Stringed Puppet to be easily manipulated by the Puppeteer, power that be. The Deputy IGP must be held personally responsible for the safety of RPK who has been heard to be tortured otherwise he must be made to eat his own medicine come the New Dawn of Malaysia.

Moronic PeeM and Botak Home Minister last minutes’ attempts to cling on power by using the fear tactics of using the ISA at their whims and fancies selectively against dissent & tried to deny their own actions as they now have no balls to face the wrath of the all the Rakyats of Malaysia. ONE DAY THE MORONIC BOTAK AND FLIP FLOP AND C4 MUST BE MADE TO TASTE THEIR OWN MEDICINE OK?

All Rakyats of Malaysia will see to that these Clowns will be thrown out soon come the New Dawn of Malaysia & that all Rakyats of Malaysia will welcome the New Malaysia on Malaysia Day 916, 2008 for a Malaysia for All Malaysians.

Justice MUST BE DONE for Altantuya and for all those detained under ISA without the trial nor the rights of appeal. Light-up a Candle in the Lantern of the Mid-Autumn Festival for them all to usher in the NEW DAWN OF MALAYSIA COME 916, 2008 and the New Government in the New Parliament Sitting come this Monday.

Good evening Nuraina,

Although we had been looking forward to Pak Lah stepping down, Malaysians would not find any good reasons to celebrate.

The economy would not turn rosy even after he step down.

Firstly, the next PM is Pak Lah's choice not the Rakyat's choice. Najib's report card is glaringly red in colour. Let's not talk about his past years performance. I'll just highlight on recent performance. If we remember clearly he is the man heading the BN machinery for the March GE and Permatang Pauh by election. He just fell flat on his face.

As a Minister of Defense, such performance really tells a lot about his aptitude and capabilities. He does not know anything about his opponents or understand his audiances. Like his boss, he lives in his sphere of fantasies. Honestly I don't trust our country's defense in protecting our nation in the event of war. Our Defense Minister past and present are clueless.

Now that Najib is the Minister of Finance, I am very worried about what might happened to our nation's economy and wealth. He still thinks that everything is rosy. What can we expect from a man who can't even manage his spouse's excessive spending habits. Would he be able to turn our economy around or push it further down?

As a PM, he's taking after his predecessor. Lip services but no directions. No charisma but weighted with a lot of heavy excess baggages.

Having said all the above, I think right minded Malaysians should keep our eyes and ears open all the time watching out on this bunch of incompetent jokers. We should let them know all the time that we are watching them closely and we have a choice come the next GE if they don't perform. We must let them know that we the Rakyats are expecting results i.e. we expect a clean, competent, democratic and world class government. It is our LAWFUL RIGHTS! Being sentimental would not put food on our table and would deprieve our future generations of inheriting a fine, beautiful and great nation from us.

Sejak design blog Puan diubah warna kelabu ni ia begitu kurang menarik.

Sekian terima kasih.

Dear Kakak,

Rocky lately spoke about being "in support" of the Tabung to save Utusan Malaysia, providing his arguments.

Many find his arguments as incomplete.

The best demonstration of why Rocky's analysis is incomplete, and an exposition that completes Rocky's argument, with a lot of evidence, is Haris Ibrahim's excellent retort (see the blog link below).

Unfortunately it is not receiving the attention it should receive to balance and complement Rocky's view.

Maybe you like to comment on it?
