..for blocking the the popular news portal, Malaysia Today.
“Because we found that some of the comments on the website were insensitive bordering on incitement," -- Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission chief operating officer Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi.
Big bad mistake, Sharil.
And you know why!!
Now, meanwhile, check out Rocky's Google, Go Away!
Raja Petra Kamarudin & Malaysia Today - Now this is indeed a very controversial guy, to put it mildly.
ReplyDeleteI must say that there are some aspects of him and his `news reporting' style and content that I'm not too happy with.
However, I'm dead against this effort of blanking him out; i.e in having the ISPs block access to his site. If you aren't happy with him, then take him to court as Shafee did.
I don't agree with (nor believe) some of the things that he had written about. That's why I'm not a regular reader of Malaysia Today.
However, I resent MCMC/the government's move to block his site - so much that I'm now becoming a more regular reader at the alternative site:
http://mt.harapanmalaysia.com/2008/
Is it the decision by MCMC or DPM? They did not learn their leassons from GE. The BE too could not help them to learn the mood of Malaysians. I believe BN leaders have lost their ability to think and act rationally.

idiots..what idiots..its such a pity....
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely right...now will the govmen also close down the untouchable Mahathir's blog which is the mother of seditious blogs?
ReplyDeleteSuch an act comes under trait No.5 in "The traits of the Malaysian Politicians"

Kak Aina,
ReplyDeleteAisehman's Censoring the Internet is illegal took a look at the Act and its provisions.
Pretty good argument and one that MCMC should explain clearly.
Wonder why they can block the many pornographic websites that can easily be accessed.

You are 100% correct Suresh (9.54pm). I have read the posting too. It's a very C4sive posting by Raja Petra Kamaruddin with (as usual) the photocopies of the relevant letters regarding the completely corrupted subject matter ... Wali Kota
ReplyDeleteSome people are stoopid...some are farrrking stoopid. Or is it a genetic disorder. I gues DNA bill will be good.
ReplyDeleteWe can remove the scumbags with DNA profiling before these idiots destroy the very fabric of freedom of info.
Lets face the fact that Pete has gone overboard with his articles. Do you think that all his comments are for the betterment of the country. More of a personal attack targeted at certain individuals although I agree that we all need an alternative media reports.
ReplyDeleteIts alright, I think that we have more than enough bloggers that will continuously filter us with more accurate and fair reporting.
MCMC allowed and is allowing ponographic sites, ultra-religious sites, yet it is clamping down on a socio-political site!MCMC is not doing its job!Wonder who is directing MCMC to act as a joker?
ReplyDeleteMalaysia has just lost its integrity! If I am not mistaken, Malaysia has given an undertaking to let tne internet be free when it was promoting the so-called Multimedia Super Corridor.Or have we given up?

ReplyDeleteIts alright, I think that we have more than enough bloggers that will continuously filter us with more accurate and fair reporting.
And pretty soon, these other bloggers will disappear too.
I do agree with you that RPK had gone overboard with some of the issues. But what I dislike - and fear - is this blatant act to cancel out someone's voice.
After Malaysia Today, MCMC/the government might "feel encouraged" by us not voicing out our opposition strongly enough - and they'll target the milder bloggers too. Susan Loone and Anil Netto comes to mind ... and then it'll be Rocky's Bru, Nuraina etc
Another attempt to shore up Najib's crumbling PMship? At the cost of Malaysia's reputation .
ReplyDeleteMCMC have a lot of other things to do that they are not doing. Instead, it chooses to be the judiaciary on internet.
Does gov using MCMC means that they do not have confident in our judiaciry system? In addition, the act of the bypassing lawyer ( read Bar Council ) comment on DNA bill.
I guess the only good guys in the BN book is still the mass media. Very obedient dogs.
Dr Mahathir is also against the MCMC order to the ISPs (of course, since the MSC was one of his pet projects). I'll be his unpaid press secretary today and paste it here in full:

Blocking Blogs
1. When a Government makes a promise to the country and then reneges on its promise, then not only will the Government lose credibility but also any respect that the public may have for it.
2. I do not often agree with Malaysia-Today.net and Raja Petra Kamaruddin. He had been sometimes quite irresponsible. But court action had already been taken against him. He is not above the law and if he is found guilty there are already adequate punishment that can be passed against.
3. But to break a promise and to openly show that you can meddle with the security of the internet is to expose a degree of oppressive arrogance worthy of a totalitarian state.
4. I had once before written to a Government Minister that Malaysia has become a police state because the Government instructed the police to call up people who invited me to give talks and coerce them into withdrawing their invitation. The police is not supposed to do that. When the Government makes use of the police for extralegal work then the Government is guilty of abuse of power.
5. The Minister simply replied that I had retired and it was better for me to literally shut up.
6. Now this blockage of the blog is another evidence that this has become an authoritarian state, elections notwithstanding.
7. Where are we heading? The censorship of news in the mainstream media is known to the public. Certainly I know of the blackout on me and the spins on any news about me. Now this.
8. I know that things have been engineered to ensure Khairy Jamaluddin will win as UMNO Youth leader and Dato Seri Abdullah Badawi as President. Democracy in UMNO is dead. And when democracy dies in UMNO, the party itself will die.
9. I would like to say this to the Prime Minister and his minions. You may have the power now. But as in five States, you may lose power some day. And this will certainly happen because of your obsession to block all contrary opinion from being heard. It will blind you to the reality of the situation so that you will continue to do wrong things and the people will reject you totally.
There are always laws and court procedures to settle matters which are deemed illegal..
ReplyDeletecensorung is one thing, but censoring without proof is another..
have anything been proven?isn't it political to use power as a shield instead of law..
