Refresher...

Blogger Helen Ang asked this: if Penang had 84 per cent Chinese voters, would DAP be willing
to grant instant citizenship en masse to Malays – which then within the span of two short years – reduced the Chinese voting strength to 57% while at the same time increasing the Malay electoral power in an inverse and corresponding proportion?

Helen said that that was what Umno did.
  • In 1955, Malays made up 84.2 percent of registered voters in Malaya.
  • Two years later was Merdeka which allowed close to one million non-Malays to become citizens between the period of 1957 and 1960.
  • Two years after Independence was the 1959 general election. This time, Malays made up only 57.1 percent of the electorate.
Through its own actions, Umno diluted its Malay voter base advantage by a whopping (84.2% -57.1% =) 27.1 percent in one fell swoop.
Now if the shoe was on the other foot,
Would the PAP-DAP — hypothetically as the ruling party — be willing to absorb and enfranchise Malays residing in the Republic of Singapore North en bloc so that as a result, Chinese voting strength suffered a drastic drop from 84 percent to 57 percent within a single election interval?

Pn Nur,
Perhaps we should not forget the social engineering of the Singapore population post seperation by Harry Lee. He cunningly preempted any possibilty of the Malay population having any majority or substantial number of votes in any electoral ward. It was his hindsight that they would never be a Malay "Lim Kit Siang" or "Karpal Singh" to raise sensitive issues in Singapore Parliament.
When compared to the "Hindraf" or " Mikhal Sakti", my fellow brethern south of the border are rather docile indeed. Perhaps I'm wrong for who am I to say that the Singapore Malays are not a contented lot.

Is this Helen Ang the same lady who was blacklisted by the gomen. If I am not mistaken she used to be a real pain in Umno/BN's butts, till she knew that she was in hot soup.To avoid a visit by the SB boys she switched allegiance. Now she is a real pain in the PR's and especially the DAP's asses. She changes colours as often as people changed underwears.

Nuraina,DAP will do what is good for the rakyat. It need not need to have a blogger who has two heads(double headed) to tell them what to do.This lady should stick to blogging for her political masters, and stay out of other people's bedroom businesses.

Anon 539pm,

The problem PAP is facing in Singapore is not from the Malays but from the Chinese! But Harry knew from the early days that his fellow Chinese from Canton, Peking and elsewhere would be easier to quash than, say, if the political foe was an Indian or Malay. Not only did Singapore bring in more Chinese from China and HK and made them citizens, the government also "spread out" the other races in geographical terms so as to dilute their influence further. The Malays in Singapore are contented, indeed, they would not ask more than the few token posts that the Government gives them.

The only reason pre independence citizenships were granted is because the immigrants were contributing enormously to Malayan economic and it has nothing to do with voting....which is not the case in East Malaysians.....

bravo on you for highlighting this..so if a chinese can think clearly and rationally about the what ifs in malaysia, she is a turncoat? if a malay were to think inversely, he/ she would be lauded as a beacon of understanding, a real malaysian? we malays have been suffering and simmering silently for as long as we can endure..just imagine the brouhaha and international outcry if we exploded, really exploded like we nearly did in the 80's b4 some goon pleaded, begged us not to go on a rampage..the stereotypical syrian, baghdad, afghan scenario will be the expected specter that will visit this land of the malays, rendered a wasteland by international meddling..

Self Deportation said...

Naivity was the reason why Tunku and UMNO allows so many chinese and indian labourers left by the British into Malaya citizenship.

Also the euphoria of independence, made the malays oblivious to the danger of large immigration.

It is up to the present generation of UMNO and Malays to take corrective action like the Chinese government in Singapore. The Chinese brings in million of Chinese and Indians as citizens of Singapore so that the native Malays are outnumbered. They then voted for the Chinese people.

Here in Malaysia we should use the vernacular schools to remind Chinese and Indians of their motherland.

Voluntary deportation should be encourage. Allowances for transfer should be available. There are many Chinese and Indians who would like to die in their motherland.

Its win - win. They leave and dont antagonise the natives Malays and bumiputeras.

manmanlai,DAP will do what is good for the rakyat? You mean rakyat berbangsa Cina? I am half Chinese, and DAP is as racist as the old apartheid regime in South Africa. If they continue as they are now,its the Chinese community who will suffer in the long run.Its greed and arrogance.
