@5Xmom: I think all Christians shud march for all the persecution they had done to us and our Lord.
So when do we take tweets seriously? When do we not? How do we know when someone is jesting and when she is not?
Certainly, sometimes people don't think before they tweet happily away in cyberspace.
I don't know 5Xmom (Chan Lilian) but I have come across her comments in some blogs that I follow. I don't follow her on twitter so I don't really know what she's been tweeting about..
Some people who follow me on twitter retweeted her tweet (above).
Some people took exception to her tweet. One of them is Tony Yew. He is not amused. He thinks her tweet is seditious.
So, this afternoon, he lodged a police report against Lilian. HERE
Lilian, according to this blogger is employed by the Penang DAP government.
She is the official video-journalist for Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng. HERE.
The blogger, Apanama, thinks that 5Xmom has crossed the line. Just like Tony, he thinks her tweet is seditious.
As for me, I think she should know that her tweet will elicit all sorts of reaction.
Was it meant in jest?
Because in the first place, she's making a false statement.
That is a lie.
I know one thing, our tweets reflect our thinking. Not everyone realizes this, of course.
Christians follow their priests just like Muslims follow their ulamak.
ReplyDeleteWhy create Monster stories out of women's talk? It's just like OBW club la.
Go get a life.
I don't know why but the Chinese overseas (migrated) love to tell the Mat Sallehs that they were being persecuted by the Malays in Malaysia!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe they don't know what persecute means for them to use the word lightly!
*Persecute - torment continuously for one's beliefs.
Nasib baiklah Melayu ni boleh berlebih kurang punya race. If not, I'm scared to even think of the fate of the Chinese in Malaysia.. I mean the Chinese nowadays in the cyberspace are heaping insults upon insults on the Malays with no end in sight. The majority of Malays might be silent for now BUT I doubt that they will be silent forever..
come on, how can anyone think that she is jesting. There's nothing funny about what she said. She is an adult, bukannya budak sekolah yang berhingus. She must take responsibility for what she said. It takes a small flame from a tiny brainless matchstick to create a big fire. Her attitude is a product of the DAP party. I know you are trying to be fair but please dont become ridiculous ion the process. A bigot by any other name??
ReplyDeleteI respect your opinion, Puan Nuraina.
ReplyDeleteBut, should tweeting be taken seriously ? The Tony fellow is just being childish.Lodging a police report is wasting time !I do not think her tweet should be taken seriously. It is just like the Ibrahim fellow frothing in the mouth and airing his opinion publicly !
he calls that seditious?
ReplyDeletehe hasnt met Perkosa guy?
"Was it meant in jest?
ReplyDeleteBecause in the first place, she's making a false statement.
That is a lie."
Is it? False and a lie? An exaggeration, perhaps, but given the events of the last six months, understandable, no?
In the same vein, I can well understand substantial numbers of Muslims in Australia, Europe and the USA feeling persecuted, under siege. Yes, they are not prevented from carrying out Friday prayers, but statements in the media, including from political leaders, and latterly, the ban on minarets in Switzerland would lead Muslims to be wary, feel under siege, and rightly so.
Here, Christians are not prevented from worship. But they do face problems with constructing places of worship and have to resort to shoplots, e.g., the one in TTDI. They have had to face patently false, a lie, headlines in Utusan Malaysia, not some marginal rag, but a major newspaper -- it would be like The Times or The Guardian in the UK headlining that Muslims are plotting to take over the country. Would one not feel under siege?
I might just add that 5xmom's twitter is a closed account -- one has to sign up. There are only 980 followers. In comparison, Utusan Malaysia sells 170,000 and Mingguan Malaysia 370,000.
Did Tony Yew make a police report against Utusan Malaysia?
Dear Nuraina, as a journalist, perhaps you could do a project like interviewing foreigners on their feeling of the 9 of July and would this affect their stay in Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteSome people just do not love to live in peace and want to experience what war is like. Or perhaps they just want to be fashionable like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia or other chaotic countries.
ReplyDeleteIf so, just leave the country and go join them. Leave us in peace please, not piss.
A GOOD MAN DOES NOTHING.
sharifah: thank you for commenting.
ReplyDeleteyou remarked:"I know you are trying to be fair but please dont become ridiculous ion (sic) the process".
usually, i'd let this kind of remark pass because, well, it's just your opinion.
i'm just trying to figure out where and which part that i sound "ridiculous"...
lee,
ReplyDeletei'd like to be taken seriously when i'm not jesting. if you know what i mean.
anon@6:33am:
ReplyDeletewell...yeah...even the perkasa guy!
anon@9:14PM:
ReplyDeleteoh...come on.
Get a LIFE. Cops shld be doing SERIOUS work. Why not go after PERKOSA? Nuraina, do you not think PERKOSA shld be the one being censured? You guys make me sick.
ReplyDeleteAs a Muslim, I find that tweet a bit disturbing. That's true. However, I can't help thinking that this matter has been politicised. I don't think the report was really made to eradicate sedition, but rather to taint the opposition party's image, as always.
ReplyDeleteTo anon 9:14
I am not sure myself about the truth of the tweet. I have seen a lot of churches in Malaysia and how merry the Christmas celebrations nationwide. Especially now that the copies of Bible in Bahasa have been released, I think it's too much to equate the Christians here with the Muslim minorities in Europe or elsewhere.
Also, about the Utusan headline, it's not at all about Christianity for all I know. That is merely and solely political. Hence that is nothing like how the image Islam is being tainted over and over again in the West.
Helen Ang has a very well analyzed article on this.
ReplyDeleteRefreshing to see clarity. Journalists like her are a rare breed, not compromised by the “FOG of dogma”.
The Singapore government has a major problem with its Evangelical Christian missionaries. Their influence peddling is very cancerous not unlike the rabid right wing nuts of the “tea party” in the US who advocate among other things violence against women, clinic staff & doctors who advocate for a woman’s right to choose to have a baby or not and this movement has warped into a very negative and sinister shadow in Republican political sphere.

Helen Ang lent clarity to the alarming & astonishing response to this tweet from the administration..."as recently as a week ago, Prime Minister Najib Razak in an address to some 200 BN supporters made this riposte: “We wish to tell our friends, the Malaysian Christians . . . if they respect us, we will also respect them.” He’d fired the salvo on July 22 upon his return from a visit to the Vatican and audience with the Pope."

This is very disturbing as the DAP seems to be catering to its powerful affluent Evangelical Chinese Christian lobby not unlike the "Tea Party" nut bars in the Republican Party.
Lilian Chan is working in the CHief Minister’s Office…and by virtue of that, is his mouth peace.
The exco of Democratic Action Party is being overrun from within by born again FANATICAL a-holes who harbour delusions of grandeur, inspired or captivated by sermons that over-emphasize this grand delusion that Roman soldiers some 2000 years ago nailed *** to a scaffolding and [he] somehow died for “THEIR” failings.
This is what Raja Petra would call a belief system not FACT.
You are first and foremost a political party. Your actions are meant to serve the rakyat based on FACTS.
ACT LIKE IT!!
Malaysia ia a plural society remember that we love breaking coconuts during Thaipusam. Carrying Kavadi, not so much. Dare you to rescind Chinese Ang Pow packets …love the breaking fast feasts during Ramadhan. Not sure what Buddhists do during Wesak..eat oranges and sticky cake ??? !!
I hope All souls day in Malaysia evolves to the South American kind where we all dress ghoulish like zombies… I wish we had Halloween on a major scale.
From Singapore:
Singapore has warned an evangelical Christian pastor that his online videos are offensive to Buddhists and Taoists, underlining the city-state’s concerns that religion is a potential faultline for its multicultural society.
Pastor Rony Tan, of the Lighthouse Evangelism megachurch, apologized and pulled the video clips off the internet after being visited by the government’s Internal Security Department (ISD) on Monday, the pastor and the government said on their websites. “I sincerely apologize for my insensitivity towards the Buddhists and Taoists, and solemnly promise that it will never happen again,” Tan said.
The Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday that “Pastor Tan’s comments were highly inappropriate and unacceptable as they trivialised and insulted the beliefs of Buddhists and Taoists. They can also give rise to tension and conflict between the Buddhist/Taoist and Christian communities. ISD told Pastor Tan that in preaching or proselytising his faith, he must not run down other religions, and must be mindful of the sensitivities of other religions.”

The MRHA (Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act) came into being against a backdrop of rising religiosity, not just in Singapore but worldwide. Mr Lee Kuan Yew said in a speech to a Buddhist gathering in December 1988, a year before the MRHA was tabled in Parliament: ‘The present phase in Singapore tends more towards intensely held beliefs than towards tolerant co-existence. At a time when Islam is resurgent and thrusting, Christians, especially Charismatics, are in a dynamic, evangelical phase. This has sometimes led to friction, and requires sensitive handling.’

Speaking of tweets:
ReplyDeleteMANILA, Philippines — Former president Joseph Ejercito Estrada on Monday chided a Malaysian diplomat’s wife over her message on microblogging site Twitter calling Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal an “infidel Malay.”
Estrada said that Dato Zainab, wife of Malaysian ambassador to Manila Dr. Ibrahim Saad, insulted Rizal and sowed religious hatred as she lashed out at Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, an ally of the ousted Philippine leader.
“It appears that in her desire to insult Anwar, she also effectively insulted our national hero Jose Rizal and the Filipino people who regard him with reverence,” Estrada said in a statement posted on his website.
Dato Zainab, in her tweet originally written in Bahasa on July 16, said: “Anwar Ibrahim is clearly pro-Christian, an admirer of Jose Rizal the infidel Malay! Oh yes, don’t forget…”
