Construction of RM36bil MRT To Begin Next July

This is what the Prime Minister announced today.

Najib Razak said the Cabinet yesterday (Friday) approved the implementation of a mass rapid transit system for Kuala Lumpur.

It is the largest infrastructure project in Malaysia and is one of the economic entry points identified in the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley National Key Economic Area under the Government’s Economic Transformation Programme.

Construction work to begin in July next year, is scheduled to be completed in about five or six years.

The MRT is expected to improve public transport in the Klang Valley and generate 130,000 jobs during its construction.

It is also expected to generate gross national income of between RM3bil and RM4bil per annum from 2011 to 2020 from direct construction and operations and another RM8bil and RM12bil as a result of its multiplier impact.

Things to remember in planning public transport.

    1. Are the support services reliable and affordable? Example: The trains are fast but also must be supported by reliable and affordable feeder buses and taxis.

    2. Flash vs practicality. Must be able to differentiate between what is not needed and what is needed so money can be well spent.

    3. The fastest way is a straight line. Granted that sometimes planning must adhere to contours. However, try to make travelling from point A to point B without having to go to C and D.

    4. During planning stage try to put oneself in the passengers shoe especially when it comes to economics, feasibility and practicality.

    5. Last but not least during the planning stage, go on the public transport for 6 months to get a gist of what's really going on.

Those Who Fail To Plan, Plan To Fail. Therefore, Plan Well!

Could anybody in the know kindly advise on the exact MRT TRACK route and highlight how the properties facing the LDP will be affected and what steps will be taken to mitigate the pollution and noise from the construction. Thanks , Sleepless in TTDI
