Whose Penyangak Are They?

You know the ones wearing Parti Keadilan Rakyat t-shirts who were reported to have attacked two photographers - Mohd Sairien Nafis, 26 of NST and Halim Berbar (foreign media).

This is not the first time we've got reports that supporters purportedly from PKR had roughed up Press photographers as well as Barisan Nasional campaigners.

I say purportedly until it has been proven that these guys are PKR supporters.

It's good to know that PKR is taking a serious view of the matter. If these guys are PKR's members, then Anwar, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and the party's leaders should get tough on them.

PKR de facto leader and a Permatang Pauh by-election contender, Anwar Ibrahim said that the party will launch an investigation into this latest attack on the two photographers outside the nomination centre in Permatang Pauh Friday.

Malaysiakini quoted him in in Penang yesterday, saying that no one should jump to the conclusion that the perpetrators are PKR members.

Here's the report:

“The mainstream media, (such as state-owned) RTM, will immediately apportion the blame to us. I say, let us investigate and punish those perpetrators, irrespective they are from Pakatan Rakyat or Barisan Nasional,” he said when asked to comment on the incident.

Anwar, who is PKR candidate for the Aug 26 by-election, held a 45-minute press conference at the Yayasan Aman building in Permatang Pauh this morning.

The building is the party’s main election operation room for the by-election, where Anwar is seeking to make a comeback to Parliament after an absence of 10 years.

Referring to a similar incident earlier this month where a female photographer was assaulted by alleged PKR members, Anwar said an investigation later found the perpetrators were not linked to the party. (See photo by TheSun)

He said despite the culprits were not PKR members, his wife and party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail had apologised to the victim in recognition of the importance of the media.

“My point is that the mainstream media is at fault for presenting a biased case, not only that, but malicious attack (against PKR),” said Anwar, before he spoke at length on how the media had been unfair to him and the opposition.

Photographer injured, lost his camera

He took a journalist from Berita Harian, an Umno-linked Malay daily, to task when he asked Anwar whether the ‘samseng’ (gangster) culture was now prevalent in PKR.

Berita Harian said this ‘samseng’ culture is now prevalent in PKR (but) when (Umno Youth deputy chief) Khairy Jamaluddin and gang threw bottles, they were not at fault,” the PKR leader shot back.

“This is the Berita Harian culture which must be corrected because it is slanderous and treacherous to defend corruption and cruelty,” he added.

Anwar was apparently referring to the incident of throwing mineral water bottles, sticks and flag poles during the nomination of the hotly contested Ijok by-election in Selangor in April last year.

In the latest assault yesterday, a New Straits Times (NST) photographer and a French photo-journalist were attacked by a group of people allegedly to be opposition supporters.

The 26-year-old NST photographer Mohamad Sairien Mohamad Nafiz, who suffered bodily injuries, also lost his RM15,000 Canon digital camera, according to a NST report today.

The French journalist meanwhile were said to have sustained head and leg injuries.

The incident took place when the duo were leaving the nomination centre at around 1.30pm and was attempting to take photos of a rowdy group harassing several BN workers in a pick-up truck.

The attack continued until a PKR member came to their rescue, said Mohamad Sairien.

Police: We’ve five witnesses

State PKR secretary Abdul Malik Abdul Kasim was quoted in the NST report as saying that he regretted the incident but added that the party could not ascertain who the assailants were.

He however added that they have reasons to believe that there could be groups which wanted to implicate the party in the attack.

In a related development, a police spokesperson said that they were still in the midst of identifying the assailants of the two photographers but no arrest had been made.

Penang police’s public relation officer Shaharon Anuar Abdul Latif told a press conference at the Central Seberang Perai district police headquarters today that the police have received two complaints in relation to yesterday’s incident.

He said there were five witnesses of the attack.

  5. Perhaps the guy who bang Anwar under lock up is not Rahim Noor. Its someone who put on a mask ala Mission Impossible and maintain character till today ....

Please la not all this cheap tactics, propaganda, spin an dcounter spin, ... its all irrelevent. Its all cheap campaign tricks and media play. Baik BN or PKR, more so Anwar's obvious wayang.

Bila kita punya politics nak jadi politics of substance?

Look back at Anwar's and BN's record and manifesto. What has Anwar done and what has BN done incluve whatever allegations?

Don't forget the 2-year buildup for Anwar to steamrolled Ghaffar. THats father of money politics in action and now speweing abt corruption and cronyism.

Since we are talking abt cronyism, lets not forget names Khalid Ahmad, Md Noor Mutallib, Nasaruddin, Kamaruddin Jaafar, Kamaruddin Mohd Noor, Rani Ibrahim, Dato Ibrahim himself, etc etc etc ...

Lets not forget he has never delivered anything of substance as Minister up till DPM, just like Musa! Opps ... he introduced bahasa baku, very significant.

Maybe he could helped Musa's WPI to develop creative industry and do more wayang down there. Very beneficial for economy!!!

Police said they will investigate. Well I suppose I know what the investigation is going to conclude. There's no other way!! This reminds me of the firing of pistol incident at Kg Baru mosque during the height of Reformasi in 1998/99. There was this "Harakah" man wearing shirt written with the word "HARAKAH" at his back. This man was shouting anti Mahathir slogan the loudest, eclipsing those of genuine reformasi followers. Becoz of his overacting, the organizers got suspicious and consulted the genuine harakah photographers present. The organizers then demanded to check his IC. Of course he refused becoz that wud hv exposed his real identity (he doesn't have civilian IC). BEcoz of that, genuine Reformasi men tried to attack him and then he fired his pistol to defend himself. He was exposed. Of course you didn't get this thru MSM. I believe the same tactic will be used everywhere more so in Permatang Pauh. In desperation they will resort to all means imaginable even to the extent of copying what they used to denounce like street demonstration. Hv they got permit to demonstrate againt MB of Selangor almost everyday? Where's ITU BUKAN BUDAYA KITA?. Gone with the winds.

  27. Asal usul Kontrak Sosial.

Based on Anwar's past from 1998 when he first face the baptism of fire in his fight for keadilan I have not known him for using violence of any kind whether as a protection or a tool to achieve his end. The huge crowd were with him during the height of his arrest and it needed only a word from him and the the people would have come to his aid in force. Therefore I cannot relate the violent behaviour to PKR members as this does not reflect the father's character.

PKR leaders SHOULD just apologise diplomatically, resolve to bring justice and promise better press protection in the future. INSTEAD of making excuses and pointing to past examples from ruling party. This will only make them look petty and ugly. After all, so what if the aggressors are PKR supporters - just let us know that they will be hauled to the police and be accountable to the law. After all, we were not born yesterday. We don't expect all PKR supporters to be angels. There will be bad apples. Even worse, to even suggest that they were 'plants' from other political party? Makes PKR sound like it is in denial! Definitely not a trait we want in a future leader. (We have had enough denial syndromes from past/present leaders.) Remember, perception is crucial, and now PKR MUST be perceived to be accountable!

I heard that this alleged scandal will be used against him shud he be critical towards UMNO leadership. He reluctantly agreed to be BN candidate for fear his scandal will be exposed. It's not normal for BN to allow its members to contest both DUN and Parliament. Arif is already an ADUN. Nobody wants to be BN candidate. BN was desperate after a mufti and a former mufti declined the offer. Same with the case of a former minister investigated for his suggestive actions towards a woman. They put it in cold storage to be revived when he turns hostile towards UMNO. This modus operandi has been extensively used by BN/UMNO especially under Mahathir.

    Aug 20, 08 3:40pm

  45. Tidak tidur,

DO you know the difference between being declared a bankrupt and being a convict.

Phewww!!! Sometimes educating people who think they are clever just because they blog is like pulling teeth!

You're not jailed like Anwar if you are a bankrupt. Amin Shah is not a covict. Anwar is an ex-Convict. GET IT?

Amin Shah wasn't convicted, he was declared a bankrupt according to you. A major difference if you studied A level Law at the very least.

Anyway, what the hell has this declaration got to do with his brother contesting in PP?

Small minds trying to think big!

Tengah celik pun macam comatose, apa lagi kalau tengah tidur.

    Da Real Deal:

I was talking just specifically about your comment that Anwar is a sodomist. Which is unproven and so since it is unproven, he is innocent and is not a sodomist. Case closed.

And I never talked about Arif Shah (please read my previous comment to you carefully). I don't know why you are pulling him in. Are you hallucinating from UMNO fever? Are you okay, boy?

Fisrt of all I was addressing another person comparing two personalities. One who is smeared because of his brother's antics, the other rightfully smeared because of his own.

You barged in uninvited and drew out only Anwar leaving the other bugger out which would clearly take my point out of context.

That is the reason why I brought Amin Shah's name back in. To show what a hypocrite you are becuase it's ok for the guy you're routing for but while using the same principle, it's not ok for the guy opposing your dreamgirl Anwar.

You're clearly in the wrong chambers. Better not miss your medication or this will keep on happening.

Please remember, you were called to the bar at the Holiday Inn by your buddy to join him for drinks, not Lincoln's Inn!

Denning would have laughed his dentures off if he were to read your findings.

Let me make a simple correction here: Not being guilty of sodomy doesn't mean he is not a sodomite. It just means he wasn't proven in court to be one. His case was dropped on technicality. Strain your mind a bit and remember that there was at least one Judge that said he did commit the act nonetheless.

Don't waste my time anymorelah Hakim. You tak berapa adil lah.

da real deal, you said "His case was dropped on technicality. Strain your mind a bit and remember that there was at least one Judge that said he did commit the act nonetheless". Now judges are supposed to decide on evidence. If no evidence or lack of it, you are not guilty. For the judge(s) in question to say that Anwar did it while no evidence was adduced is strange. In fact that decision was criticised the world over for its wierdness. Of course no local legal expert did it (we understand why) except Prof Faruqi of UITM. One correction: the case was not dropped. It went up right to the Federal Court which overturned Court of Appeal decision and acquited Anwar (but with that heavily criticised uncalled for additional remarks, just to please the Govt as if it's their role to please Govt).
