Be Frugal: Grow Your Own Greens And Rear Your Own Livestock

According to Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman who is FOMCA communications director, Malaysians should now review their budget, lifestyle and spending habit in accordance with the latest development (price hike).

Malaysians need to be thrifty in their life.

"If they have some spare land near their house, they can start planting vegetables. For those staying in high-rise like apartments, they can use the pots or the hydroponics method," he said.

He also suggested car pooling or change to a lower cc vehicles which consume less petrol.

And obviously, he advised us to try to cut down the expenses on utilities like telephone, water and electricity.

And etc etc etc...

Of course, in other words, we all have to change our lifestyle. Everything must be less, less and less.

But what I'd like to suggest, besides, growing your own vegetables, is -- rear your own poultry for the eggs and meat! Why don't you?

So, why don't we have our local councils amend their by-laws to allow residents (whose homes have got reasonablly-sized backyards) to "bela ayam dan itik".

If price hikes are going to be the main menu in the next five years...I'm all game to rear my own livestock!

But are the government and fellow residents up to it?

Yeah, yeah, I hear you -- so leceh, right?

yeah laKak Aina. I'm thinking of growing sweet potatoes, cabbage, carrots and perhaps a little bayam at the backyard. We already have some lemongrass, pandan (screwpine) and a small limau sambal tree. My neighbour even have cili padi shrub, belimbing buluh tree, and asortments of other herbs.

  2. Dear Nuraina

I have applied to my Condo Management to release some unutilised Green Lung conjoining my patio next to the common swimming pool, to rear some chickens, ducks & geese, a cow or two, as well as chick peas, french beans, onions and potatoes.

Somehow, I'm not hopeful. What if my neighbour wants to rear piglets or calves?

Looking at the way things are going (not just in Msia) but around the world, I m all for living frugally and being more self-sufficient (even though leceh).
i m trying to be a wiser consumer and not depend so much on convenience items and foodstuff. who knows when the oil supply will come to a trickle and finally stop!!? or even if the supply doesnt run out in my lifetime, what kind of oil prices (and other prices) will i be staring at? right now i can afford to use aircon but i dont use it for so many obvious reasons (energy, cost, environ). many ppl i know are surprised but perhaps highrise is cooler ;)

  5. I have a reasonably sized garden that could support chicken rearing. If d powers to be allows that, the chicken shit can even be used to fertilized my vegetables!!

Nothing wrong with being frugal. It is about time that we accept the fact that petrol wont be there forever, and we certainly do not expect the govt are going to maja us forever. And home grown veggies are the best! I've been doing all my life in my backyard and it saved me buckets!

Maybe it's time Malaysians woke up and realised that what happens in one part of the world will gradually have a domino effect on Malaysia.

Months back I was warning my relatives to save up, grow easy to maintain vegies as the credit crunch from the States had already made its presence in EU.
It was only a matter of time before Asia felt its effects as well.

If inflation goes up, then it's time to ask for a relative percentage increase of salaries to help lessen the blow, because the rate of living IS and WILL go up.

I'm not sure if any of you realised this but the demand on land, water and oil is increasing faster than what's produced.

  11. Behind my house theres an empty land. Can I apply TOL to breed lembu for milk and some kambengs. In between I can plant crops & breed some poultry.
The land is big enough for me to supply the whole neighbourhood. It looks like some reserve land because theres Petronas Gas Pipe running below. Its been empty for years now.
Can someone tell me where to start? Which authority body to apply from?

Do any one of u guys remember 1997 - the whole Soros / IMF debacle? We started on an austerity drive - newspapers will blaze ways of grwoing food in condos, etc on the front page - UNTIL they realised such a move is actually damaging to the country, forcing us to go into a recession faster.
Scary headlines, inflation > people spend less ( plant food ) > more businesses go out of business > retrenchment ... etc .
The govt need to make people spend more !

    Kak

This has got to be the most ridiculous "advice" I've heard so far on how to deal with inflation. Is the kerajaan trying to get urban people to plant their own veges and rear their own meat? Is this not what it's like in rural areas and the outskirts? Is this how negara maju is supposed to be like?

Ramli AR, I don't think you can rear lembu and kambing in Putrajaya, but you can still tanam some serai, pandan, and pokok pisang la.

I too stays in putrajaya, and that neighbour who had the belimbing buluh tree plus a pokok turi is also stays in putrajaya. Normally if one move out of a quaters in putrajaya, they will clean the place (read - tebang all the pokok2 herb shrubs) but I think this time around even the maintenence will not have the heart to clean it.

  18. I think we all miss the good old kampong days. No imported stuff, no global warming, healthy and close-knit family ties.

In the words of Sudirman's song "Balek Kampong ... "

So our pakcik and datuk nenek were actually very wise indeed. What's the point of high IQ when wisdom is what the world needs ...sigh ...
