Freeing The Press...

Today is World Press Freedom Day.

Today is a day we raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and to remind our government of its duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom .

Our Press is far from free. Let's continue our fight for Press freedom. Let's fight to remove the shackles that are constricting and restricting our media from doing what it is supposed to be doing -- informing the public truthfully, without prejudices, without fear or favour, without any interference.

Tomorrow, at 2pm at the Annexe, Central Market, Kuala Lumpur, join BENAR, a civil society group that is promoting Truth In Reporting. Click here.

Meanwhile, join us in calling for the repeal of all draconian and outdated laws regulating the Press, including the Printing Presses and Publications Act!

Any government which has a Printing Presses and Publications Act, can shout at the top of its voice, for as long as it wants, that it has press freedom, no one is going to believe it! Why do you think Mahathir has always find this an albatross around his neck, all these years?

  5. let's help free the minds of our editors and journalists. if we can create environment where they can carry out their duties without fear or favor. someone suggested that we ban political parties from owning any influence over media companies. right now, directors of many newspaper companies and tv stations are linked to government. we have editors who not only are appointed by government, but are more government than the government could ever be in terms of censoring and censuring journalists.

Today, the mainstream press is totally dominated by the government or government linked companies. All the editors, or should I say, half-past-six mutts, are appointed by the powers-that-be. More so in NST and Berita Harian. Imagine, a junior like Hishamudin Ann taking charge of the NST. If the government is serious about reforming the press, it should institute radical changes. The first thing is appoint capable and apolitical people to the top positions. And the first thing they should do is sack Hishamuddin Ann and his acolytes, and appoint Rocky as the NST supremo. This will go a long way towards restoring trust in the mainstream press. So Pak Lah, are game for the challenge?
