Saving Sufiah?

This is about Sufiah Yusof, Malaysia's child prodigy in the UK, the girl who gained entry into Oxford at the age of 12. Here.

After Malaysian authorities got wind of her "predicament" either from Rocky's Bru, Utusan Malaysia or directly from the News of the World, here's the plan for her, according to Bernama (quoting Minister in the PM's Department Zahid Hamidi).

The Prime Minister's Department and the Malaysian Missionary Foundation (Yadim) will try to assist former child maths genius Sufiah Yusof, now aged 23 and fending for herself as a prostitute in Salford, Manchester.

Zahid said they would help the gifted girl to return to the right path through the "Save Sufiah Programme".

"The first thing we should try to do is to contact her mother or arrange a meeting with Sufiah to find out the real reasons for her to turn to prostitution, offering her services through the Internet and using the name Shilpa Lee," he told reporters after attending a biefing by Yadim here Tuesday.

It has been reported in the "News of the World" that Sufiah is now a 130- pound an-hour hooker operating from her dingy back street flat.

The "Save Sufiah Programme" is headed by Deputy Minister in the PM's Department Mashitah Ibrahim (she of a certain fatwa) who will come up with strategies to assist Sufiah as soon as possible.

Sufiah created news when she was accepted into Oxford University at age just 13. Her mother, Malaysian-born Halimaton Yusof from Muar, Johor, and her father, Farooq Yusof from Pakistan both tutored her and her siblings at home.

However, Farooq is now in jail after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting two 15-year-old girls whom he home tutored in maths.

I know you guys mean well but....

I'm not a psychology expert but it doesn't take one to know and understand why she's become what she is. It's meting out treatment for her that needs skill and expertise.
And you think she needs "treatment"?
She may need advice on "living dangerously", though.

If you guys are so intent on "saving" Sufiah, go ahead. I hope Mashitah does it right.
Er.....are you all going to the UK to do all this? How many times? And for how long each time?
Your first Cabinet project, huh?

And...just don't use Sufiah to score points.

It's good that you all want to help. Sufiah may choose to refuse your help. She is over 21. And she is, after all, not Malaysian.
So, do exercise care and caution...

You know how good we are at screwing things up...even with the best of intentions!

By the way, read what her former husband had to say. Here.

  1. They must remember, she's not Malaysian.

Just wondering how the authorities going to go about helping her.

Dr Mashitah and her "Rumah ku Syurga ku", and her "lihatlah, pandanglah, keluargaku keluarga contoh" has that "holier than thou" kinda mentality, might use the wrong approach/strategy.

That's the last thing we want.

I dont know. I may be wrong. I hope I am.

    "Save Sufiah Programme"??!

She's a full-fledged adult now, her options aren't ours, they're hers. It's nice that we're so thoughtful and all but if we think we can just sweep in and save her like the white-winged hero we think we are, that just ain't real. I'm sorry if this comes across cold, but you can't save a girl if she doesn't wanna be saved.

what is this now?...some national campaign called "save sufiah programme"?...its bad enough that the british media had highlighted her "plight" but to have malaysia to help her officially/publicly by holding a campaign of that sort would'nt it be kinda embarrassing on her part...
honestly,i think it should be done discreetly and furthermore, she is above 21 and not a malaysian citizen if i had read correctly.

    Masitah?
    helping Sufiah?

    wait wait wait...
    i heard this story yesterday...
    Samy Vellu?
    helping HINDRAF 5?

so... this is Masitah's continuation to the BN's Lawatan Sambil Belajar eh?

    Help Sufiah how?
Like take her photos, lock her up and give her lectures?

    She's not even Malaysian!

So many unreported tales of Malaysians in Malaysia resorting to prostitution because of poverty, unbalance in the economic system etc... and they all went unassisted...

    ReplyDelete
  5. Anonymous4:31 PM

What about Malaysians girls here who are hookers? Underaged ones. Why go all the way there to save one when there are many here?
Because it's good press? It's a good story? Because she's a genius and it's such a waste? So if you're not a genius and poverty or whatever forces you into prostitution, then you're less deserving of help?
    Sheeesh.

At a time when the Badawi government is under so much pressure to deliver, do they still have time for this nonsense?

At the risk of sounding callous, I think the government should instead take a good hard look at its own backyard instead of using taxpayers' money to cash in on recent reader interest in Sufiah's tragedy. There are plenty others in Malaysia who deserve the government's attention despite not having a high IQ or the privilege to study in the UK.

This is clearly an attempt to score points. If they really want to help her, they should have done so out of the media limelight. There is no reason to subject Sufiah and her family to further unnecessary publicity.

I will like to post a question here....while it is commendable that we are mobilizing our resources to save Sufiah, I am sure that there are also a lot of other urgent needs within the country as well. Is anyone doing anything to address those needs? Unemployed youth, poor students, delinquent students.....and many many more. Who are helping these people?

  8. Anonymous4:44 PM

    This doesn't make sense.

The woman certainly has issue that need to be dealt with, but she is, without a doubt, able to think and make a clear choice of what life she wants to lead...

moreover, she has the ability as well.

Now, compare that with the impoverished here in our own country, who, with no means and ability, have turned to vice/crime for a living.

Sure, they too have a choice..but how about we reach out to the one's here instead of flying all the way to UK??

baik buat charity kat sini dulu sebelum pi sana lagi better value for money....and usually our authorities are so patronizing and it is such a wonder if the people who they want to help will bite back out of disgust..

Sorry sounding so harsh...guess I am tired looking at the way we do things here in Malaysia...

    Saving her from what exactly?

Is she starving? Is she physically hurt? Is she even asking for help?

In the first place, we should not even publicise this story even though we can lay claim to her mother being a Malaysian.

But she is not Malaysian and Malaysia is not her home.

And if anything, this story humiliates the mother's side of the family who are in Malaysia and I can only wonder what they have to go through right now because the whole of Malaysia now knows about their niece.

If we are serious about "saving" prostitutes, how about doing more on child prostitutions which I am sure exist even in Malaysia - even though they are not geniuses who studied in Oxford.

Yes, she is not a Malaysian. Her father was a Pakistani and her mother was a former Malaysian sho had given up her Malaysian citizenship. I wonder why the Malaysian took such keen interest in her affairs.

  13. There are others in the same predicament as Sufiah here and overseas too.Gomen buat apa?

Why the sudden interest and I agree as you put it..just don't use Sufiah to score points.

We have our MSD in London, there is an ustaz attached. Let the MSD ustaz handle the case. Why waste the taxpayer's money sending a Deputy Minister there, unless the gomen has some subterraneous intentions. Mashitah got better things to do over here.

I get really iritated when i read news like this. Why should the M'sian govt save Sufiah? She is not Malaysian, she has never lived in M'sia and she probably does not give two hoots about M'sia. Should Dr Mashitah persist in 'saving Sufiah', I would suggest that she does so on her own time and money rather than that of the govt. The taxes I pay should not be used to save the soul of a GBP130 / session British prostitute.

  17. I think this is rightly as pepatah melayu always says "kuman seberang laut nampak, gajah depan mata tak nampak"..

We have so many social problems and so many malay malaysian that need to be saved, but just because there is oppurtunity to travel overseas and suddenly this case is a priority...

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am all for saving Sufiah, but i think this is another kneejerk reaction again. To help Sufiah, one has to find Sufiah first. Are they going to send people to track her down? Have we forgotten Sharlinie and Asmawi?

ufiah is resilient, she has been through a lot and she will come back. And there are people here who will try to find and help her.

Pls do not forget Sharlinie and Asmawi who are still out there.

  19. Anonymous6:31 PM

The busybodies should leave her alone. Locals have no locus standi since she's a foreigner. Do you see the Pakistanis getting involved since the father of the girl is from Pakistan?

The problem is that Muslims in general, and Malays in particular, are always desperate for "heroes", as Pak Samad once wrote somewhere. I forget where. He mentioned all the rumours spread in the Muslim world about Neil Armstrong, Princess Diana, Michael Jackson etc etc being Muslim. All untrue of course. Malays think the simplest way to get great Muslims is to convert great non-Muslims to Islam, according to Pak Samad in the article.

Anyway, she's either in self-destruct mode or has turned professional. She's in it for the money.

Won't be surprised if some of our sex maniac YBs are among her kinky clients.

I believe that there are a lot, lot more cases here in Malaysia that need such help. Why not start with helping our girls...or you people (Mashitah etc) are only interested in glamorous cases?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anonymous8:30 PM

Firstly, all this 'helping' her is exactly the same thing that was done to her by her father - running her life and controlling her mind. This so-called 'help' will be just as destructive as what happened in her past.

She is an adult now and should be allowed to live the life she chooses, whether we feel it is morally right or wrong. She may not even want a foreign govt to 'save' her. Having rejected everything about her past, she will also reject anything connected with her parents.

She needs to experience the struggle of growing up which the rest of us take for granted, but which she never had the chance to live through. We all make mistakes, so as to grow as individuals, and we need to do it on our own. Definitely not with anyone's help. Unless it is asked for. Has she asked for help?

She is already independent and facing the realities of life, like earning a living. Is it right for us to dictate to her what kind of job she should have?

Secondly, if the M'sian govt is seriously going to 'save' her, then it will only make itself a laughing stock of the whole world. Please, there are thousands, if not millions, of true-blue M'sians who genuinely and more deservedly need their govt's help.

Everyone knows she is not even a M'sian. Probably never set foot in M'sia. The only M'sian connection seems to be the birthplace of her mother.

Moreover, this 'saving' by a foreign govt for a British citizen may be seen by some political circles as interference in national affairs.

It appears that the M'sian govt is capitalizing on the tenuous M'sian connection in this saga just to boost its own public image, rather than out of real concern for the girl's religious morals.

Sufiah is a BIG girl now.
She was an abused child that happened to be a genius. Shame on the parents. THis is another aspect of the sex industry that those fighting trafficking in women and girls are constantly pointing out. Happy childhoods from good families don't lead to prostitution

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anonymous9:06 PM

The intention may be praised BUT
the success possibility may be zero.
However, maybe the authorities can start programmes to save"Sufiahs"by studying the reasons of why such predicaments happen and what support is necessary especially for the families of these sufiahs to enable them to reach back to their loved ones. This is a first measure. Support to the affected family then for them to reach out to the estranged loved one.Subsequent measures then need to be developed on the person itself.
As for the real Sufiah, well, if we cant help her,we can still All pray for her now that we know.
As a person of faith i know prayer changes things.

  31. I think this "save Sufiah" thingy is an utter waste of time not to mention the taxpayer's money. The woman is above 21 for godsake and we cannot and should not impose our moral values on her. She live in the UK all her life and her thinking and values are as a westerner does, does she want to be "saved"? God forbid, she may be enjoying what she is doing and consider our good intentions as a nuisance.

Dr Mashitah and the Malaysian Government just need to read akhbar Metro every morning to identify the many Malaysian children and women who need urgent help and must be helped NOW. Do not go overseas on a wild goose chase please, better do good deeds here.

For Sufiah, we Malaysians should just pray that she will come back to her senses one day and do not get infected by the men she allowed to abuse her when she finally get her life back together.

She's a big girl - has gone through a lot and may be tougher than we think.

But in the first place I dont think the local media should have highlighted her plight.

    This is something "yang mengaibkan."

Her mother still has relatives here in Muar. I can just imagine how she is feeling right now.

England is not like Malaysia - young adult can do whatever they want, and most would accept the consequences of what they did later on in their life. A clever girl like Sufiah probably knows what she is actually doing and why. And England has got way better social support system in place and certainly doesn't need a busybody government 10000 miles away to help one of the many poor souls here.

    Assalamu'aalikum..

Daripada tak buat apa2..apa untungnya dapat kalo sekadar kritik2 ni..lebih baik la tolong..sekurangnya ada jugak usaha nak menyelamatkan umat..at least gerak la jugak..sama ada berjaya atau tak tu kemudian nanti la baru cerita, jangan la awal2 kita dah set negatif..think positif ma..
    tindakan Allah atas sangkaan hambanya..
kita pun..jadilah sebahagian yg memainkan peranan menolong.. buat solat hajat khusus utk beliau ke..
solat seorang mukmin nilainya besar disisi Allah..

    Allahummansurna..

At this writing, her father is in jail for molesting two girls while giving them math tuition.

Perhaps, we should also send a delegation to England to save him as well.

For all you know, the daughter ran away from the house because she was molested by the father. This is usually the case with runaways. Having being molested, it's not difficult to see why she turned to prostitution.

Anyway, once a genius, it doesn't mean always a genius. Sometimes, these things wear off.

For example, kids of European-Malay parentage start off looking like Eurasians, then by the time they are a certain age, they look exactly like Malays. Read up on dominant and recessive characteristics.

Similarly, Sufiah would have started off with a little bit of the pervert father's brains. Later, she would have degenerated into having the mother's brains.

salam. i dont agree at all - to send someone (using rakyat money) just trying to "rescue" sufiah? from what? I am staying in UK and working with one of UK gov department - mainly to give benefit to their people. there is no good reason for sufiah to 'sell' her body for money. UK government provide too many benefit to live with. so, stop membazir duit kerajaan. thank you wassalm

setuju dengan kak ton, she's not even Malaysian

As I predicted, Sufiah is happy as she is now.

    See today's paper http://www.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2008/4/7/nation/20870201&sec=nation

    As quoted fr the news:

"Maths prodigy Sufiah Yusof, who is now working as a prostitute, claims she is living the life she wants without any regrets."

"Sufiah is adamant about continuing with her “career” because “I have a nice life.”"

"“I have never felt so confident about my body and I’ve had some of the best sex of my life,” she said."

Shame on the Minister for being so nosy and coming out with such idiotic idea!! How embarrassing!!!

at first, when the whole nation and NATIONAL newspaper talk about her faith, I did have a slice of pity for her. But then came all kind of rubbish bout saving her ( using the DUIT RAKYAT), and it pissed me off.
She is responsible of her own choice. Coming from a broken family and tragic background is not a ticket for you to be stupid?

Nothing gonna harm us if we approach her. She still confuse with her decision and what she gonna do in future. 23 doesnt indicate that she know what the best for her. Also, her gifted-genius also doesnt mean that she smart enough to make rasional decision. Britain didnt take care of her, is it wrong if we help her? We can used our people from Malaysian Embassy in UK to go and approch her. After all she is the one making the decision to follow or not. If she refused, at least we had tried. If we do it correctly, keikhlasan hati tuhan yang tahu wahai penulis.

why is this happening? 3 reasons.
    1. she is malay.

    2. she is very intelligent.

    3. she is in a bad way.

    in the order above.

As far as I can see the BN govt will pay attention to your needs if you are meeting the above criteria.

    Meaning:
    1. If you are not Malay, piss the f**k off u damned "pendatang"!

    2. If you are Malay but not intelligent/pretty/powerful/or anything greater than sub normal, kindly fend for yourself!

Please note the profanity is only for non-malay cases. For Malays, deny, but be polite doing it. Just like in our hospitals. When the patients are "bukan orang kita" let them wait....
