TV3's Entertainment Programme Banned
Remember "Sensasi" which had actress Rosnah Mat Aris uttering insulting words about Prophet Muhammad's wife in front of a live audience, causing a controversy and forcing her to publicly apologise ?
Well, it has been banned with immediate effect.
This was decided by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
That particular programme was shown on Jan 30.
According to Star On Line, MCMC , after its investigations, found that it had failed to abide by the approval conditions and that the television station had failed to control inappropriate content.
The MCMC said this in a statement issued yesterday.
Here's the rest of the story:
MCMC corporate communications head Adelina Iskandar said the entire Sensasi programme should have “contributed to the national aspiration and not offend the sensitivity or values of the community.”
She said that TV3 should abide with procedures and obtain the Film Censorship Board’s approval should it wish to produce the show as a recording.
The statement did not clearly state if Rosnah’s comments had insulted Prophet Muhammad’s wife.
However, public reaction as reported by the media suggested that what she said should not have been connected to the Prophet’s family.
Adelina stressed that the requirement to be sensitive to the community’s feelings was contained not only in the Content Code and the Special Licence Conditions but also in the Multimedia and Communications Act 1998.
The one-hour programme hosted by Awal Ashari and artiste Intan Azura is aired on Tuesdays at 11pm and panel members from the arts and entertainment industry are invited to share their views.
In a slot last month, Rosnah when answering a question, had linked a piece of gossip about her (Rosnah) with the age of Prophet Muhammad’s first wife, Siti Khadijah.
Her short statement had caused a huge controversy.
Viewers had also sent in letters expressing their regret over her statement.
hi nuraina,
ReplyDeletein my humble opinion as a non-muslim, i feel that it's really ok to insult the prophet whether jesus, mohammed etc as i dun think they (the prophets) would really care and would forgive the 'offenders' anyway.
i mean if i crack a joke like "we need Moses now to burn Bush", i hope it will be ok. even a ruder one like "she was so hot that even Jesus had a go".
i hope malaysians on a whole will develop a sense of humour.
Totally disagree with freelunch2020. Muslims must not ridicule our beloved Prophet. It's non-negotiable. No No No.
ReplyDeleteaMiR
i have as much a sense of humor as freelunch2020,i would like to think.i am not too religious a muslim. but somehow hearing what was said, the harsh words used to describe Kathyijah's advanced age when she married prophet mohamad, almost on the brink of death etc. it grated my ears. oh. oh. i said, some heads sure gonna roll.
ReplyDeletenow i wonder how old is this lady is and how much younger is her boyfriend, for her to draw such a pararrel between 'their' twosome and nabi's and his wife, for her to mitigate as it were and to justify. their true love and and then, true to form, saying it is jodoh. hah ! And, no, i do not particularly care if he has a toyboy in tow all the time. if not married, maybe they should. God has almost decreed it, seeing it was mnetioned on tv.

Ok,i'm surprise that they banned Sensasi because of that issue. Seriously, is there really a need to do that?
ReplyDeleteFrom my point of view, the action taken potrait an image that Muslims are too sensitive when it comes to Islam. It is like.."Tak boleh kena sikit".
Rosnah dah pun minta maaf dan rasa kesal dgn tindakan dia. That, to me is a good. And let it be a lesson to others to think before they speak. And it is also a lesson for Sensasi to be more careful next time.
I thought Islam and any other religions taught us to be tolerant. Well,if there is a mistake, make it known/ inform that it is wrong or not appropriate. Give advice and accept apologies. But why must we keep on..and on... talking about the same issue and then, banned the show. They banned the show because of that episode but they didn't think carefully of the impact? Yes, they did, only in religious pt of view for that statement made by Rosnah ONLY. They didn't think what will happen to the employee who are working for Sensasi. But of cause, that will be Sensasi's producer problem and not the authority. Right?
And btw, though i feel that the authority is "ada sikit too much" that doesn't mean i agree with jokes/humour that is related to any religion or insulting prophets. That is a NO for me. Of cause prophets don't care what we wanna say about them BUT sendiri mahu tahu la.. And, where is our sense of respect for them (prophets)? Yes, our prophets are human, just like us. But unlike any of us, they are Prophets.
And c'mon, there is a lot and variety of jokes which we can use to bring in the laughter. Why MUST die2 use prophets in our humour??
Ena,
ReplyDeleteRe: shutting down sensasi
Somehow I knew they'd do something "more stupid" to respond to a "stupid something".
The writings were on the wall. Last November, the Internal Securities Minister decided to suspend the publication of the Weekend Mail for publishing the "smut" issue. That, to me, was more obscene than the pictures those half-past-six editor-wannabes at the newspaper published in the first place.
Suspending the paper was not a "smut' move at all.
Now they do this to a tv programme. Yes, Rosnah the Blonde said something really blond. Well, maybe she was stupid but she's learnt her lesson and she's now, probably, not so blond/stupid anymore.
If the authorities wanted blood, go for the hosts and producers. They are the ones who should be held accountable for the programme, anyway.
Banning Sensasi is an easy way out. The authorities should really stop taking the easy way out of every problem that confronts them.
rocky,
ReplyDeletei have always believed that malaysian authorities often take the easiest decision in face of any problem, no matter how simple the problem is -- ban. Ban, ban, ban.
No need to think -- just ban this and ban that.
ban fast food, ban this movie, ban this book.
That has been the case since forever.
And I do agree with you. I would have expected the TV3 to take haul up,say the producers. Or the MCMA to summon TV3 to explain. Banning the programme is certainly not the answer or the solution. It is a stupid decision
It is not the programme that is wrong.
How that contentious bit got through in the first place beats me.
Rosnah got her punishment. I think that was a good lesson for her to use her head the next time she is asked any question, more so a provocative one.
Banning the programme is a silly thing to do. It is not addressing the issue.
to freelunch2020 who wrote, "...i feel that it's really ok to insult the prophet whether jesus, mohammed etc..."
ReplyDeleteand for good measure he just had to include, "...i hope malaysians on a whole will develop a sense of humour."
I say, since we are being so liberal about this... but, why stop there?
let's extend our over-developed sense of humour to include your ancestors and for good measure... let's include your Mum and Dad and brothers and sisters and what have we else!
but, please remember what that French midfielder did to that Italian defender in the World Cup Final... and the reason why the headbutt became news.
so, what say you now?
...and it was not murdered, only amputated.
ReplyDeleteAlmost everything now, from democracy to Sensasi, dah diterencatkan.
Islam pun dah diterencatkan dengan Islam Hadhari...
Woii gomen!! Woii MCMC! Dont ever terencatkan mee rebus Kafe 4-Teen!!
Hang jaga mee rebus Kafe 4-Teen!! Hang siap! kutu ni nak debik hang cukup-cukup!! aku nak bawak anak bini aku sekali..
aku nak pi senyap2 ja, sebab aku nak debik hang cukup2!!
Hidup mee rebus!!!

ReplyDeleteAfter all the backlash, TV3 must have expected the ban or had knowledge of it prior to the announcement because last Tuesday's show was "dibatalkan".
The station announced the next day the show was going to be pre-recorded to control content.
Those who had watched Rosnah act and being interviewed before would know that she can shoot her mouth.
What TV3 needs is an experienced host. Awal and Intan are not.

Seperti kata Sulaiman Sulaiman on his blog, it's all about about responsible hosting and TV journalism.
To "abang" Freelunch,
ReplyDeleteIf I insult your mother, your father or your late grandmother, would u accept it if i say its just a joke?
If u dont accept it, does that mean you dont have "a develop sense of humour?"
After all, to pious Muslims( which FYI is not the same as extremist or other mumbo jumbo), Muhamad's status and the respect that they accord to him,is higher than any parent. They have too offer him a prayer everyday as a requirement of faith.Though many offer prayers to their parents, they do it as a personal initiative, which doesnt have the same status.
So if you insult Muhamad, to many muslims its more insulting than insulting their parents. In fact when you insult religious personalities like Jesus or muhamad you are actually insulting the religion.
When u wrote " i hope malaysians on a whole will develop a sense of humour" in conjunction with your previous two sentences, it implies that to u, if people do take offence on insults to their religious figures, it means they havent yet aquired a 'developed" sense of humor.Conversely,it also has the implication that the person who's making the insult is supposedly in possession of a more 'developd" sense of humour.
So Chief, I have to ask:
1)Does insulting prophets and parents mean someone has a "develop sense of humor"? By the same token if the recieving party takes offence to such insults, does it mean they dont have a develpo sense of humor?
2) Or does insulting parents, prophets and late grandma's in the name of jokes suggest that the person not only DOES NOT have a DEVELOP SENSE OF HUMOR, but actually has a SICK sense of humour and is totally devoid of even a modicum amount of respect and decency?
dear all who hold a different view,
ReplyDelete:D
it's just my humble opinion. it's up to you to form you own opinions.
salaam. peace.
Ya know, when Muhammad started preaching, he was ridiculed, isolated and taunted as a false prophet.
ReplyDeleteDid he get angry?
Sorry, should have said that my comment was directed to the people here who are getting so sensitive.
ReplyDeleteTo "abang" Freelunch,
ReplyDelete(Oops..my previous comments were abit inaccurately written.Though the general conclusion will still the same, nonetheless, for the sake of accuracy this is the corrected version)

Like "freedom of the press", "sense of humour" has become a much-abused cliche used by people who espouse a "free for all" society.
ReplyDeleteAgain it involves the question of good sense, and a sense of decorum that is suitable for civil society and its sensitivities. And don't say there are no sensitivities please!
People and their cultures have developed an acceptable and unacceptable (not necessarily right or wrong) way of looking at and doing things. There is an underlying system and (un)written pinciples of human behaviour influenced by our religions, social and national code of conduct as well as family and personal ethics that guide us. We take offence when any of them is transgressed. Who can deny this?
But I find the usual knee-jerk reaction of government agencies most disconcerting. Ban this, ban that - when what is needed is proper monitoring and maintainence of guidelines. Most of all people who handle public information must be of the highest calibre - well-groomed and trained.
And for goodness sake TV stations!Stop hiring dollybirds and pretty men to facilitate TV programmes. They neither have the wisdom nor maturity nor wit to engage in the right discourse.
TV stations abroad employ the right criteria to recruit TV facilitators and hosts. Malaysian TV stations eg TV3 employ people who look like clones of each other viz cute, round-faced female newscasters who present in the same monotone or pretty boys with dyed, spiked hair who are too eager to please.
I very much prefer decrepit TV hosts like David Frost and Larry King. They have credibility and can hold their own in provocative situations.
BON NINI
Totally boring!
Hi Ena,
ReplyDeletethank you for offering to help with the tag thing. i have asked Zorro and BigDog to help. You are the third blogger who will write a couple of paras about one weirdness of mine. I will use what you write for this tag business.
Thank u!
have to disagree with freelunch... religioun is not something you can make a mockery out of it... it's the pillar of life to some, certainly not one tat should be made fun of. i may not be a muslim, but i dont think anyone should say something like that in public.
ReplyDeleteDearest 3540 Jalan Sudin (just imagine if your name is like that on your MyCard..hehehe,isk isk!),
ReplyDeleteI watched the programme with my mother in law. Personally, I think she meant no harm. However, her choice of language and intonation are so classless.
The point is, I couldn't agree with you more. It is so Malaysian to ban everything that offends certain quarters.
Dont they know that by banning or prohibiting certain thing will only make the public more curios.
Just look at Madam Rosnah Aris, I think she is more famous than she'd ever be in her acting career. Her rating must be high now.
What bothers me is the way the hosts and the audience were clapping after she came up with the controversial statements. I felt sorry for them.
Hope to bump into you in Bangsar too Nuraina. Gimme a buzz when you are around. Rocky has my number(err..Well, I kinda of force him to store my number in his fancy blackberry. Go on, call me crazy
elvira, you are right. all that clapping pulak made rosnah more excited. i'm sure rosnah did not mean it that way, tapi manusia selalu terlajak kata. even me.kalau awal ashaari dan intan azura lebih peka tentang apa yang rosnah ucapkan dan menasihatinya, mungkin rosnah akan cepat-cepat beristifar.InshaAllah,no muslim would want to insult Rasullullah s.a.w. Alhamdulillah, rosnah dah bertaubat. segala yang berlaku pada dirinya pasti ada hikmahNya.
ReplyDeleteminta maaf elviza, tersalah eja nama anda. case terlajak lagi!
ReplyDeleteSomeone please enlighten me....how can something be an insult when it is the truth? I mean, everyone knows that the Prophet's 1st wife is older than him...so what's all the hoohah about? Are the Muslims ashamed of their own Prophet's lifestyle? Of course, other than the fact that this Rosnah lacks class and sense, this one slip of the tongue should not have gather so much anger. It just doesn't make sense.....
ReplyDeleteSalam to NAS.
ReplyDeleteRosnah had made the biggest mistake in her life. But she is not too late to istighfar and bertaubat. She might have said what she said bcoz she is ignorant/jahil or plain celupar( mulut laser). But insyaALLAH and hopefully she will taubat. And if she is ikhlas with her taubat ALLAH will accept it. Its fitrah insan for us human being(anak Adam) to make mistakes in our life. ALLAH knows that and ALLAH is ever willing to accept human beings' taubat if they are sincere.
Our authorities had and will always act or react on the ad-hoc basis. And BAN is their favourite word and action. Short term action with fast result. We are really a 'make-up' and window dressing nation.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI think this really is nonsense and in complete contradiction to the "tolerance" allegedly preach by Islam. So far everywhere in the world, practitioners of Islam are overtly sensitive. Cakap sikit sikit, potong kepala. Tolerance konon.
With regards to the most recent "insult" majority of us don't even know what she said verbatim because no one can even print the bloody phrase.
