Only 14 died in NS, not 20

That's what the DPM Najib Razak said.
Thank you for clarifying that ONLY 14 have died since the NS programme was implemented in 2004, and not 20 as reported.

We are all so relieved, aren't we that ONLY 14 trainees have died. They're not your kids or mine. Some other people's. So, who cares?
Aaah. Only 14. And we can all sleep well tonight.

The story is here. Let's hope that it was not him who said ONLY.

The problem with band-aid, it only treats the symptoms and the underlying cause undiagnosed.

According to reports of latest death, fever was bandied as the cause. No one in the world has ever died of fever. I can't laugh at this stupidity cos it's a tragedy.

Btw, am not a doctor nor pretend to be one.

Only 14? Why shoould there be 14 death anyway? Couldn't it be avoided at all?
Frankly some death could have been avoided if the Camp Management have been taking it seriously whenever a trainee complain of sickness rather than thinking they are trying to avoid certain strenous excercises.

Is there a way we the rakyat can propose that NS be abolished? The way things are going now, memang menakutkan...

well... those 14 are expendable... wait till 'someone's son' get the bad news... then we'll see...

Nuraina,

Only 14 only. We have to wait for more to die before the govt can act.

If we want to speed up actions, then minister's children must be one of them. Otherwise, we will need more children to be sacrificed.

If it's truly leadership by examples, then all the children of pak-pak menteri should be on priority list for enrollment, pre-registered - shouldn't they?

Or are they not required to go through the same "nurturing" because patriotism, excellent character and spirit of unity is genetically hereditary? Hahaha.... Laughter is the best medicine.

Uh! Geramnya!

What's the fuss, only 14 died. Malaysians are too caring, they must dehumanise a bit. They should learn from their leaders.

Dear Nuraina,

He's seems so proud to announce that only 14 died, that it is some kind of morbid achievement.
See, we are not evil after all. Our stupidity and egos have only killed 14 of your children.

In any other developed country people responsible have been sacked, resigned or committed harakiri for much less. But not in Bolehland. Our leaders are too infallible, too precious.

Perhaps there is some KPI hidden somewhere in the program and the death target has not been reached. So what is there to worry..for him and his partners in this crime, that is. In the meantime, parents wait fearfully wondering if their child will be the next victim.

Perhaps until that KPI is met, the NS will go on its unconcerned way feeding the cronies and crooked contractors until their KPI's are met. But wait, greed has no KPI, it can never be satisfied. So there you have it. Let the kids die, but not the goose that has laid the golden egg.

How many kids have undergone PLKN (NS) training since they first started, does anyone know? 25,000? 50,000? 100,000?

Lets say 50,0000. 14 kids is like 0.028%. Is that a lot? If its 100,000, then its 0.014%.

Lets re-look again on the amount of death for these 18-19 year olds. Don't 18-19 year olds die under the care of their parents too, for what ever reasons ppl die (road accidents, drug overdoses, dengue cases, drown whilst swimmings, food poisonings, fist fights etc)?

Don't 18-19 year olds die of natural causes too, incl those who are not used to physical training (because of their very dormant & ultra manja lifestyle)?

Bottomline, people die. At home or elsewhere. Can these death in PLKN (NS) be avoided? If its because fist/gang fights, maybe. So is food poisoning.

But can we avoid if these people die of natural causes, dengue (which is VERY common in our tropical country!), drown whilst swimming (they could very well go swimming when they are at home too!)?

Abolishing PLKN (NS)?

Its a good program. I wish they had PLKN (NS) when I was eighteen. Now that I am a couch potato, I can only imagine how fun and challenging it would hv been!

(I was fortunate to be trained by the Field Force Police why I was sixteen and I love the two bloody weeks of it!)

Logically 14 out of 100,000 is miniscule. But looking at the population of 100,000 healthy teens, ONE death is already too many. But 14, the mortality is too high and yet it's downplayed as if it's no big deal.

Even in high risk environment, safety measures are put in place to ensure mishaps are preventable.

Every life counts, more so if it involves our youths in national service programmes.

If you talk abt army discipline, any one causing harm to others or oneself will face appropriate actions.

One or 14 is just a figure but when you add ONLY, you are demeaning life. Why? Because the life of commoners are of very little value anyway?

Yes, people die, we can't stop that but to use that as an excuse, lets close all hospitals because people will eventually die. Heck if its because of negligent by the doctor we would still scream what more when someone got killed due to the negligence of people who are entrusted to care for them in the first place and the beauty of it is that these people who die do not want to go there in the first place.

Hi Aunty Nuraina,

Tumpang lalu to BigDog please:

Hi Big Dog,

I hope you were joking with your "those who are not used to physical training (because of their very dormant & ultra manja lifestyle)?"...In fact, I hope you were joking and being sarcastic with your entire comment...

Not everyone who cannot take physical training is 'very dormant and ultra manja'...

I am a person who is believes in being up and about in everything...I never sit still, even during my holidays...To say my lifestyle is dormant is very 'out'...

Unfortunately, my 'health' does not allow me to do physical training that is strenous, and had it been that I had to go for NS, I am sure my parents would have thrown a fit, and my doctor would have had kittens and puppies...

Not that I am pampered; I love the outdoors, and would love to try just about everything (Climb Mount Kinabalu? Bungee Jump? Run a few kilo's? Hike thorugh the Great Rainforest? Do the Obstacle Course in the shortest time? Why not?), but reality is, no matter how much I try to convince myself I can do it, I can't and I would not be allowed to...

Even walking (uphill) to classes is a chore for me.

Which is why I sure hope you were joking...Because there are a lot of people who are not 'active' not by choice, people who would need the hospital, but who would not have been rushed to the correct facility like the rest of the trainies who were not rushed to hospitals...

Thank you...

PS: In normal circumstances, I would have used my name, but in this case, I think I would prefer privacy =)
